Aftermarket grips

Just picked up a nice SP101. Given that All my joints are loaded with Arthritis I want to get some grips that will help with controlling recoil. Pachmyr and Hogue are both candidates with their rubber grips. Any thoughts on which may be better?

Grips are a matter of hand size, shape and personal preference. You may find that the one I like is not really useable for you.

I like the Hogue rubber one, myself.

As noted above,, grip fitment is a personal fit item,, as well as providing reduction of felt recoil for many.
Both Pachmyer and Hogue make excellent rubber grips.
If possible,, go to a gun store & see if you can handle a set of each PRIOR to purchasing a set. That can help!

I recently bought a GP100 TALO edition, 357 3". The wood grips looked nice, but impeded speedloader use. So, I bought Pachmyer Diamond Pro grips, they are smaller than the Hogue on my 6" GP100 and fit nicely. Shot it with the new grips a couple days ago and it was nice.

I'm a reasonably competent woodworker, so I'm kinda partial to wood grips, and have made a few from scratch. The thing with store bought wood grips is that you can tweak them pretty easily to fit your hand if needed. I've never felt that rubber is superior to a well fitted wood grip. :)

I tried to like Hogue grips about forty years ago but found that I don't like "finger grooves" I've been a Pachmayr guy ever since. However, with the shifts in the market, I've been relegated to buying used Pachmayr grips on ebay.

I'm not much for Rubberbuggybabybumpers, however these Hogue's are working out really well on this SP-327-4", also on a SP-357-3".

However,,,Hogue Wood on this 1st year SP-38 special only.

I will say that I like the look of wooden grips. I bought a nice set of wooden grips for my first J-frame about 20 years ago. I modified them a bit to work with speed loaders. They lasted until I shot the gun. Even .38s beat up my arthritic hands too much. Switched out for a set of S&W "boot grips", still not pleasant to shoot but much milder.

All of my revolvers have rubber grips.

My year one SP came to me lightly used with Hogue wood. Nice grip but not quite the one. I then went to a Pachmayr Renegade. They were checkered but felt a little bulky in my hand. I reshaped them taking off just the checkering. They feel better but still not there. I finally settled on the factory rubber with antler inserts of my own making. They are slightly thicker than the factory inserts. This configuration is what I shoot the best with.

The best rubber grips I've found for the GP100 is their "Tamer" series. They are a little wider than normal and have a sorbathane insert in the back of the grips to absorb recoil. I checked to see but they don't list them for the sp101.

Sack Peterson Grips ... He made them wider than the stock grip by request. They are more along the width of target grips and soak up recoil real nice.

Strawdog, I feel the extra width in the web and palm of the hand does more to mitigate felt recoil than what the grip is made of. I'll take a wood or antler grip of proper dimension for my hand over rubber every time!

"Compac" by Pachmyr is thicker and better than Hogue for hotter loads.

SP101 grips can be had (not cheap) with wood inserts... and then you can have wood AND rubber :-)

Before my daughter did a hostile takeover of my SP101, I had tried lots of grips.

- rubber hogue, I kept snapping the plastic insert when gripping during firing
- nylon hogue, to narrow of a back strap for hotter loads
- pachmayr diamond, to bulky for carry and esthetically lacking
- factory lett, whacked my middle finger with hot loads unless my supporting hand applied upward pressure on the trigger guard
- pachmayr compact, worked the best for me and did well on hot loads

This is my second post. I'm personally a fan of Hogue grips. My favorite is either their rubber or smooth wood grips. I have had an issue with the rubber ones snapping like described and that bothers me, but I fixed it with some black electricians tape on the inside. I also like the smooth wood, they look nice and feel good in the hand.

I just received a set of large Jay Scott branded grips for a Super Blackhawk that fir my BFR perfectly.
