Many of y'all remember how about almost a year ago Jeff, Zeus, Sam, & myself decended upon Idaho as the guests of sixshot for a controlled cow elk hunt. We all killed elk and a great time was had by all of us.
Sixshot was gracious enough to give me the hide off his elk,, and I also took my elk hide. I sent both of them off to be tanned. Mine with the hair on,, and sixshot's with the hair off.
Well, I got my hide back last week,, and I thought I'd share my new bedspread with y'all! I can sleep under it with all the memories,,, while dreaming of those huckleberry shakes,,,!

Years ago my wife and I went on a sleigh ride at Keystone mountain. It was in the evening and dark, but they had elk skins like that to keep you warm. Couldn't believe how warm those things were. Nice hide

I spread it out for the pic,, and since it's so warm,, I had to remove it before bedtime. The cats have been VERY curious about it too! We'll see if they sleep on it when it cools down around here.

By the way, what was the load that you used in the 7x30 on the elk? I know we talked about it but I can't remember now to save my life.....GS

The tanned hide is a nice way to remember the hunt.
As for my load,, I'll have to go back & look it up,, as I changed bullets from my regular deer load. I use Nosler Ballistic tips for deer,, and for the elk I had loaded either Partitions,, or a Barnes bullet. I only use a 150 grn bullet.

I thought I remembered a partition but couldn't remember for sure. I was just looking at the 7x30 data recently and knew you liked it so I was curious what the deer load was that you usually use. Thanks Tyrone.

And for the record, Tyrone knew this is what he wanted to do with the hide and he took EXTREME care when he skinned this animal. He has A LOT more patience than I do for something like that, it was obvious. Of course, its not like I really needed to be careful with mine to make sure and not put any holes in it. Mine had 16 holes in it by the time I got finished shooting :)

Zeus,, if you want my deer load,, I can tell ya that one. It's a Nosler Ballistic Tip 150 grn, over 28.8 grns of H4895. I use Fed 210M primers,, and all the brass is carefully sorted & trimmed properly.

As for taking care of a hide,, I've skinned so many critters that it's not as hard as you'd think. And your elk,,, well I thought it was 18 holes,, not 16! BTW; my hide,, now has an extra hole in it from the tannery,,,! I was not happy with that,, but I know it happens.

In general,, many tanneries seem to make holes where there were none when it was sent in. It has to do with the way they work a hide,, combined with a weakness in a spot in the skin we didn't see. Or where it got shaved a little too thin during skinning. I got one deer hide back a few years ago, (hair off, buckskin) that I swear was NOT my hide. Several holes,, smaller,, and since I neck shoot my deer,,, but I couldn't prove anything.
