.62 cents a round. I got the chance to shoot
my Friend's Wind River/Jurassic 1895 Marlin SBL
45-70 Govt.
What fun, now I have to get one.

IMO the 1895 SBL is the finest version Marlin ever made. I don't use an EER scope, like he did, but can see how it would be very handy for many instances. Mostly like it was used in the movie.

The rifle I have was reworked in the mid 1990's and was an early precursor to the guide gun, although I prefer the pistol grip. If you shoot stout cartridges you need that to help hold on to the rifle. When mine was done they didn't have a stainless rifle so mine was mat finished chrome. I've also got the XS sights on it, which I find to be very fast.

Very durable. Adding to that I just watched Wind River again 3 days ago. Really a good movie. I highly recommend it. Also based on reality.

Just finished watching the movie on the Puter. Very good. Hey I need to go find a hacksaw so I can whack off my 45-70 barrel a tad. Now where did I put that scope.

FWIW I have a book about the 45-70 "Forty Years With The 45-70" In it the author states one of the most accurate 100-150 yard loads in a Marlin is 300 gr. cast bullet, large pistol primer and 10 grains of Unique. I have to agree they are cheap and it doesn't beat your shoulder up. If I'm not shooting black powder that is the load I use in CAS.

I've got an 1895G with a peep sight for faster acquisition close up that was my woods bumming rifle when I lived in Alaska.

I have a .458 Winchester, a model 700 Remington. People were always wanting to shoot an elephant rifle and of course a good share of them got a case of the 'ring eye' from getting too close to the scope.

Now when I was working for a living, I was a maintenance machinist, and we worked a lot of weekends, the machine shop being on stand-by in case the millwrights had to have a part made.

One Sunday I made a Weaver style scope base that attached to the front of the receiver on one end and the rear sight position on the barrel on the other. I then put a 2-5x pistol scope on it and from then on, no more ring eye. It works so well that I have since installed this kind of set-up on several rifles that I have.

Now this was before Jeff Cooper started promoting the scout rifle concept. Great minds think alike I guess. :lol:
