A trade question

Howdy all,

I'm thinking about trading my NIB Blackhawk (41 magnum, 6.5" barrel, blue) for a Blackhawk in 45 Colt with either a 5.5 or 7.5 inch barrel. My question is whether or not I can expect to trade evenly, or would a Blackhawk chambered in 45 Colt bring more?

Ruger's website shows the same price for either, but I was wondering about real world desirability.

While new costs would be the same, a dealer would look at the desireability of the model. Overall, the 45LC one is a more popular chambering so there's more interest, hence a better chance of moving it quicker than the one chambered in a less popular .41 magnum. Chances are you'll get asked to put some $ across the counter to make a deal. As with any trade, you don't necessarily have to thin even trade dollar for dollar. Instead look at if you're getting what YOU want in the end. Is it worth a bit extra $ to get what you want rather than keep what you have?
Remember, to the shop it's business, to you it's just a "want".

Yep... trading is give and take. If you end up with the one that makes you happy. Then you are the winner.

There's no incentive for the selling dealer to trade evenly unless your trade has a higher resale value than the one you're getting. My guess is if the dealer can't make $50 or so ..... why would he bother.

Hittman, I think he may be simply looking to trade as he didn't mention a dealer.

When I get to "thinking", the outcome is usually not as I expected :wink:

Why not just buy the 45 then you will have 2 fine pistols. I traded guns for years and usually whished I had what I traded back later. So I quit trading and now just buy what I want and keep what I already have.

A lesson that too many of us learn too late. "Seller's remorse" usually sets in within seconds, and gets worse with the passing of time.

Yea, but it gets to the point where you can sell about 100 and not really notice any are missing from the room....

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't make the post very clear. I'm not going through a dealer, but through a private party. I've been trading guns for a long time, but haven't had a Ruger in quite sometime. My question was whether or not the 41 mag and 45 Colt would be valued the same all things considered. Y'all told me exactly what I needed to know.
