A Randall knife for my Son

I finally got in the last of the two Randall knives I had ordered for my little boys. This is one I got for my second son. He is too young to walk yet, but one day he'll have this. The second one came in last year. I made them both similar, but with some subtle variations.
I don't know why, but I couldn't get one for myself. I never could have had one in my younger days, but I daydreamed. When I got old enough to afford one I always went and bought lesser knives. Now having these two knives on the shelf waiting, I definitely couldn't get one myself, but I find I am daydreaming again. I am so looking forward to handing these over one day.

What great gifts from father to sons! I have my grandfather's Marble's knife that I remember first seeing when I was about 5 years old. I'm passing it on to my son. Oh, and I did buy me one a few years ago.

Yeah it’s a funny thing how nostalgia hits. My grandfather had one, I remember him showing it to me when I was probably 5 or 6 too. He passed when I was ten and I remember hearing that old Guy Clarke song about his fathers Randall knife when I was in my late teens, and it stuck with me for life.

The 25 has been my favorite Randall for years and about 5 years ago I bought one. Also got a 1 some months after the 25 came.

I ordered Randall’s for my kids when they were 12 for their high school graduation present. So far 2 have been delivered.

Couldn’t ask for a better heirloom. Your sons will enjoy them no matter what. You should use them in the meantime. I think they will like them even more.

My son and daughter won’t use theirs. They want to keep them new. Sigh…….

Nothing sadder than an unused Randall knife.

Nice, thoughtful gifts. Since they’re too young to receive them, you could pretend you bought them for your collection, especially if you’re not planning to actually use them. Then when they’re old enough, remind yourself why you bought them.

Unused Randall, I fit that description. Mine have never even sliced a piece of paper. I just figured that I have a good number of ‘working’ knives and just really never had the want or need to use them and not sad about it either. I’m usually not like that not using something I coveted for a long time but for whatever reason in my head it’s not an issue. Go figure

My point is Randall's age well.

The OP could use them and they would still be treasured by his sons. Maybe if I had used my kids knives a little they would use them too. Fear of putting the first scratch on them seems to hold them back.

I like that sentiment a lot. Maybe I will use them on hunting trips with the boys and when the time comes I can hand them down with some good memories attached to them too.

35+ years ago I bought a processed based from a friend.
I walked into his house and on a shelf by the front door was a Randall knife with a custom Handel and a custom one of a kind sheath.
I asked him where he got the knife and he said he didn’t know.
It showed up inside his house one day. Just sitting on the table by his front door.
He wished he knew how it got there.
I called another buddy of mine and asked if he was missing his knife. He said yes.
It fell out of his vehicle one night at his friend house that lived next to my friend .
The knife was a graduation present with rams horn grips.

No worries, I didn’t take offense. I’m actually a little puzzled by it myself because I like to use stuff I buy.

Good looking Randalls! We used to have four here, but getting older and with the next generation now into adulthood three are gone, given to our niece and both of our nephews each got one. Passing along the tradition. :)

I have a few Randall knives, I use some of them and not some of the other Randall knives. No real reason.

But I also have on order a Randall for our daughter who graduates from high school in 2 more years.

This knife should come next spring. It’s one of the Bowie knives. The Raymond Thorpe model. She has always wanted a sword or some sort of dagger. But I cannot buy some cheap Chinese “toy” sword.

It’s so weird, the back log on Randall’s is up to 7 years now. Crazy!

Best thing is to plan way ahead.

I have two on order right now. The Bowie knife and the Kitchen Santoku from their non-catalog models.

My question is: if ya’ll have Randall knives you don’t use, how do you store them?

I’m wondering how to best keep the Bowie knife for a year and a half before giving it to my daughter. Well and then probably longer, as more than likely she will want me to hold on to it for her while she is in college.

So? Best Storage Method???

Definitely keep it out of the sheath. If it’s Stainless steel it won’t need much care. Just someplace dry. Gun safe, sock drawer, etc.

Tool steal requires a little more care, wax or thin coat of oil.

There are padded cases available on ebay, just be careful for moisture.

Basically store knives like guns.

I bought mine not through RMK but two authorized dealers. The 25-5 I bought from Buxton knives. I recently checked their site and they have nothing listed in stock and when I bought they had most models. Weird.
Randall even makes a Buxton Randall knife so they are or was a respected dealer of Randall made a knife if their name. I got the 1-8 from another authorized dealer, AG Russell in good standing. Both were in stock or a very short wait. Might be worth a look for you.

I even contacted Randall after the purchase of the 25 and asked them if I could get a left handed sheath for it. They said sure, so I mailed them the one that came with the knife and they mailed me the southpaw leather. Great folks at Randall.

I've bought a few knives from Wayne to avoid the wait. They were listed as available now, and he sold them at the Randall catalog price. He no longer lists them.

Wayne is very nice and easy to talk to on the phone. If you call him he will tell you what is available and what is coming in soon.

For storage, I usually wipe my knives down occasionally with mineral oil soaked paper towel. I suspect Renaissance wax might be even better. I keep them in gun safe on plastic coated wire racks so air circulates and no metal on metal or metal on cloth contact

Randalls are a good knife. Back when I was in my 20's I read a hunting story about a guy who had a randall knife. Then I heard the Randall Knife song by Guy Clark.......then one day I was at a gun show. A guy from Florida had a Randall knife. I knew just enough to be interested. I bought it. It had a brass indian head on it. I told the guy I bought it from that I thought I would take the indian head off. He said to call Gary Randall first and ask him about it. Back then there was no internet so it ook some days to find Randalls telephone number. I called Gary and told him what I had. He said does the indian head say Blackhawk Inidans on it. I said yes..He said that is 1/2 oz. of gold. He made 110 of those for each member of the Blackhawk Indian Skeet shooting club. He asked me what I was going to do with it. I said use it for hunting. He told me that is a collectors knife. He told me he would make me a knife if I would sell it to him or promised to sell it to a collector. I didn't want to wait several years for one. He said I'll send you catalog and you pick out what you want and you will have it in 6 weeks. I got the catalog and made my choice and called him for the order. In 6 weeks I had a model 5 - 6".
I was going back to Wisconsin to get my great grandfathers safe and stopped at a knife show in Bloomington, MN I walked in with it and a guy from across the room saw it and came over and asked about it. I told him what Gary said. He made me a good offer and I sold it. When I got home I called Gary and told him that I sold it to a collector. He was happy. Later on I ordered a model 7 - 4 1/2" Both knives I had my name etched on it by Randall. I use both knives for hunting. I also ordered one for my oldest sons Eagle Scout present. I ordered that last two from dealers so I got them faster. I have picked up a couple more Randalls in the last 25 years. They are great knives and I would never part with them.

I agree about, yes, use it as a tool. Otherwise it is a waste. I get that some of anything: guns, knives, cars can be so valuable to be hesitant otherwise just enjoy it for the purposes it was designed for.

I ordered both through buxton, if you call and are willing to put a deposit down they will order anything you want. This last one took about a year still, but the first one I got in 4 or 5 months.
Given that these were to be long term gifts I was ok with the 7 year wait, but a lot can happen to a company in that time. I called Randall and the lady that works the phone highly suggested buxton. They sold them at catelog price so it was all the same to me. I had a good experience with them.
