A good day at LGS

Yesterday I went browsing a couple of LGS that I visit infrequently. I saw a MKII Target for $199, but it was beat. Clerk said oh here’s another … this one was LNIB with three mags and manual for another $50 OTD. Who could say no ?
Needless to say I have already painted the front sight Orange (older eyes) and a Hammer Strut Support is on the way (y’all do know about those, right ?). Serial number lookup (212-867xx) shows 1986. Have to browse grip box I think there is a set of Wood factory thumb rest grips in there. Hope the letter service opens back up. Around here sometimes factory / employee connections pop up.

That’s a very nice looking pistol. I’ve got a particular fondness for that and have a couple around here with the hammer strut support. Makes them a lot easier to reassemble after cleaning. It was a great price on that gun.

That issue has been discussed here, many times. They can often be snugged up, without much trouble. Try using the loose fit as a bargaining chip for further discount- you never know!

This procedure will fix a loose receiver to barrel fitting on Mark pistols by taking up all the space worn by wear and tear between the square receiver lug hole and the frame lug it attaches to.

Step 1. Break the gun down to receiver/barrel and frame.
Step 2. With alcohol or acetone clean out the square hole on the barrel that the lug on the frame fits into, no oil based solvents please.
Step 3. With a cotton swab place a film of oil on the lug in the frame… so nothing will stick to it.
Step 4. Mix a small amount putty epoxy, the kind you can form and shape.

Thread 'Mark ll loose fit Barrel to Frame'

Picked up a used Mark ll a few weeks ago, as I disassembled it for the 1st time & pulled the mainspring the barrel/receiver just separated itself from the frame. Now I've probably owned 5 of these pistols over the years & this one is the first one that didn't require a smack with a mallet to pop apart.

During reassembly I tried to set the barrel lug into the frame slot by tapping on the muzzle, this was ineffective. There is noticeable play between the 2 parts when it's put together, this play disappears when the bolt is in the back locked open position, could it be because it's putting...

Hello Everyone.
New here, and still learning some of the technical terms, so forgive me if I misuse terms to describe my problem.

I have a Mark II pistol that the barrel is loose and rocks ever so slightly in the receiver. I have attempted a few 'home remedies' including shoving tissue paper in the barrel slot where it comes together. This worked for a little while, but eventually wore out.

I asked a gun shop if a gunsmith would fix it and they told me to send it to Ruger. So I called Ruger, and found that if I ship it to them, they will make any repair necessary and ship it back to...

Has anyone ever experienced a barrel that falls off the frame when the mainspring lock is removed? Usually I need a mallet to unseat the barrel. How is it tightened? The barrel is so loose even when assembled there is play.

Uncle Howie thanks for posting that. Very good info.
While the price was attractive on the other at $199 with two mags, I couldn’t pass up the one I purchased in the original post.
If anyone is interested in the other MKII target for $199 send DM and I can let you know where it is (if that’s permissible under forum rules). I’m sure the shop is negotiable and like Howie said point out the loose frame as a negotiation point. And who knows maybe it just needs a good cleaning and reassembly.

Update : I installed the Hammer Strut Support (GET ONE) and went to the range (21 degrees felt temp 8 degrees and 1 foot of unshoveled snow at firing line). Shot 30 rounds quickly with no issues - other than I should have loaded the magazines in the warm truck. I had thin gloves and a Wilson Combat loader (Get one of those too if you can find one) & still froze my fingers. Awaiting a nice set of Lyman G10 grips from that auction site. 20 rounds on this plate. I think the trigger will be fine no need for Voltsquaren. Stopped at my buddies LGS and picked up three I think earlier factory mags (bigger flat button with dull grey eagle on baseplate) for $40.

As for the hammer strut support,, it's been a long time since I had any issues reassembling a MK pistol. I learned how long ago. So for ME,,it's un-necessary.

Another update I added a pair of Pachymayr Grappler G10 grips from that auction site for $21 shipped. More agressive texture and slightly thicker. Green and Black. Give it a great feel. And 3 extra factory mags for $40.
