I wouldn't want to pay more than $500 but I suppose there are some folks that might pay up to $600.
Personally if I was looking I would try and get one that was less than perfect for about $450. :D

If it is near perfect, it would easily bring north of the $600 range.

Ruger has a habit of making something nice then discontinuing it. What a shame.
i think one of it's downfalls is also what i like about it......the rotary mag. it will only hold 4 but it is so easy to drop one and put another one in.

I got mine just before they stopped production. When I got it I thought it was a pretty cheap rifle. The wood is Birch and the fit to the stock wasn't that great and the styling was old. By comparison the 10/22's and other Ruger rifles were top notch. I hoped they would follow up with newer models. I wanted a walnut stock and a rubber butt pad and to get rid of the barrel band. I thought there should be 357 and 41 magnum calibers also. I thought there should be stainless available. I thought there should also be a mag available that would hold more than 4 rounds and be easier to insert and remove.

...NOW I just wish they still made them or would bring them back, so others could enjoy them. I think the 'cowboy' guns stole the market on pistol caliber rifles for a while and killed the 96/44 and the Deerfield.

I grabbed a 77/357 while I could, although they're still being produced. It's great little rifle. Now I want a 96/XX

I am looking for a replacement barrel band for the 96/44. I am having a hard time finding one. Thanks

Have you tried Ruger?

I found this one online.

It is for a Deerfield but should be close, except that there is a space for the plastic guard lip to fit under the barrel band.
If you want I will check it out further tomorrow as I own both. :D

Jimbo,

Ruger told me the part had been discontinued and they had no advice as where I might find one. Please check and see if it will fit. That would be great since I have had zero luck finding a cross-reference for the barrel bands in similar models.

Thank you for your help,

Mac

You might try the 10/22 barrel ban. It's plastic but inexpensive.

I will do some barrel band swapping, take some pictures, and let get back to you.

Check your PM for some additional pictures.

Barrel band update: I ordered 3 different bands for my 96/44. I ordered a band for a 96/22, 99/44, and 10/22. Much to my surprise the 96/22 fit like a glove! It must be the exact same band with a different part number? The 99/44 fit but was not the exact replacement. The 10/22 was not even close.

Jimbo,
Thank you for your help.

Mac
