700x for cowboy

I came into possession of 8 lb of 700x and need a light cowboy load I will be using a 45 colt SAA with Schofield case and a 160-200 grain RNFP any info would be welcome .

I would just explore published data in the "cowboy load data" sections from Hodgdon/IMR/Speer/Lyman/etc.

700X meters poorly; excellent accuracy potential; economical; clean-burning; relatively 'soft' recoil signature.

Ran outta time yesterday. Today am looking at the Lyman Pistol and Revolver Book. In .45 Colt with a 200gr RNFP, they show 700X starting at 5.9 grs and going to 6.6 grs..This in the Colt case. In the Schofield case, they do not show the use of 700X. There may be a reason for that. you'll have to do you're own "guestimations". As you see fit. I'd be inclined to think there should be a workable charge weight, safe charge weight, since you are talking "cowboy load". I haven't written any load manuals, I didn't sleep at Holiday Inn Express last night. YMMV. Check SASS forums, look for more data, contact the manufacterer of 700X.

Thank you for the info I could run these loads in 45 colt cases .I have been given another 4 lb now I have 12 LB .I love Unique but it is hard to come by. I also need some light loads for Vectan Powder I have 300 Lb of that.

At max charges for your 45 Colt, you have about 12,700 rounds worth of 700X.

I'm down to my last 2 pounds of Unique. As little as I shoot pistol any more, that should last me the rest of the summer. Hope the powder situation opens up over the winter. Primers are available again, but now, no powder.

Yes primers are available here also but, Federals are scarce As for powder Unique was my go to powder I am down to 4lbs , Unique, 9 lb Trail boss, 6 lb Red Dot, 2lb 296, 3lb h110, 4 lb 2400,3 lb 231, 2lb clays ,2lb titegroup, and 8 jugs of Vectan and the 12 lb of 700x.

200 gr. Cast #452460 IMR 700-X 4.5- 821 fps
200 gr. Cast #452460 IMR 700-X 5.0- 895 fps

From the Speer 14th (Sorry, only 225 gr.)-

225 gr. Speer CAV IMR 700-X 3.9- 669 fps
225 gr. Speer CAV IMR 700-X 4.3- 719 fps

Oregon Trail Data-

200 gr. Round Nose Flat Point IMR 700-X 6.1- 889 fps

In the latest issue of Handloader mag. Brian Pearce has a article on using powers not often used during this shortage of powder.
45 Colt- 250gr. Oregon Trail cast RNFP. all loads listed at 860 fps he shows 700x at 6.4gr. good article he lists 23 different powders some old stand buys.

Not to get off topic but I use 6.5 grains of 700X behind a 240 gr semi-wad cutter in my .44 Mag. Get 850 fps and most important it is a very pleasant load to shoot. My thoughts were that if a 230 gr @ 700-800 fps in .45 ACP is such a great man-stopper then the above load in .44 Mag should be a little better.....

Both only make a hole.

For shooting people a modern-design 45 ACP 230g HP at 720--820fps is advised; for the 44 Magnum any 180g JHP works. Don't load them to excessive velocity; figure 1350--1470fps best.

Not sure how the .429 Magnum would be better since bullets in both calibers mentioned are roughly the same weight and roughly the same velocity. The important difference is the 45 makes a bigger hole and that does make it a little better...

I use the same load of 700-X in my NM Vaquero 45 Colt. It groups VERY well at 50 yds.

700X works just fine in the .45 Colt . Like Unique, 800X and Red Dot, it don`t meter all that well but plenty good enough for everyday fellers like me.
I shoot a lot of Red Dot in the .45 Colt ,for CAS, and it works fine also. Have fun!!!

Just be careful of double charges. I use loading blocks and double check charges before seating bullets. And keep your empty primed cases out of reach so you don`t grab one and seat a bullet without a powder charge at all.

Have not used 700X in my .45 but have used PB with satisfactory results and 7 grs of Green Dot/250 gr cast is a superb powder economical "cowboy/plinking" load in the 800+ fps range...

I have a couple of pounds of PB left over from when I reloaded for 12 ga. before the advent of steel shot requirement. I have heard that PB can be a workable handgun powder. Suggested loads for 45 Colt, 250 gr. and 44 Sp. 240 gr? I also like Green Dot, very clean.

255 gr cast with PB...

6.0 grs = 660 fps
7.0 grs = 750 fps

Those are .45 LC SAAMI level..

I have 9.0 grs under Lyman 454190 in my notes but I guess I didn't chrono. That is a Ruger/TC load that should approach 1,000 fps... :wink:

.44 Spl? Don't own one...
