So i keep looking at an AK74 in 5.45x39 and just got my sportsmans guide that sells ammo for it for $48 for 300rnds which is about the cheapest i have seen on any centerfire ammo in a few years.
Anyone have any experience with this ammo.
looks pretty close to .223
Be a good coyote chasser.

I have a couple AKs in 5.45x39. It is a fun round with very little recoil (perhaps even less then a 223) and they shoot as well as any AK (open sights I shoot about 6-8 inch groups at 100 yards but AK sights are not exactly match sights so hard to tell just how accurate it could be with a scope or better sights.

I use mine as a plinker and I bought a bunch of the surplus Bulgarian ammo that was imported a number of years ago. Back when everything else got outlandish expensive, I switched to shooting the SAR-2 and saved by 5.56 and other ammo.

Not sure if this helps but I do like the round and if I had to use one to defend myself I have absolute faith in the AK-74 and 5.45x39 round but I would have to run out of higher choices (ARs) first before I used it in that role myself!

Thanks, that helps. Just one one of those rounds that you dont hear anything about.
I will probably get an AK rail and a micro red dot since i think a fine crosshair scope will be overkill on it.

You sure? I really think a Unertl would be the way to go on the AK. :lol:

I have an SAR2 in the caliber.

It runs same-weight bullets about 100-200 fps slower than the 5.56.

I've shot butcher stock and a chicken-chasing German Shepherd with mine.

I think of it as a .22 Mag on Steroids.

It is a really fun gun to shoot.

Reliable, too;

:shock: :lol: thats kinda like putting a titan II rocket on a model T to get to the moon :wink: :D
I looked at the Unertl site thinking "huh they make an AK???? NAHHHH I didnt think so"
I Was just being a bonehead.

I have a S&W AR and AK 74 in 5/45x39. The AK does OK with Wolf 70 @ 100 yards and the AR is coyote capable out to 250 with Barnaul 55 and Hornady 60 V-max. If I need an open sighted banger, I would not be concerned about using the AK but adding a scope to it makes it less handy and a cheekweld is not possible, making actual accurate shooting less than effective. The main reason I bought the AK was that I have a large amount of milsurp ammo which I decided I didn't want to run through the AR.
