This video is remarkable. How they worked it out with Homeland Security, FAA and all the other government protectors is even more remarkable. These are radio-controlled MODEL airplanes. No small feat! As you know the budget cuts have eliminated the military fly overs at large events. Well, there's a group of guys in Kansas City who do some formation flying in their own lanes and decided they'd volunteer to pick up the slack. They invited a couple of other groups to join them and before they knew it they had 48 guys with their homemade RC airplanes signing up to join in. If they had more time, they probably would have gotten an even larger group as people kept joining and a 49th was added near the event. One additional feature of the flyover was the use of pink smoke for cancer awareness. The folks from the Guinness Book were there and are expected to confirm it as the largest formation flight ever. And to top it off, the crowd, later set the record for the loudest gathering at a football stadium. Be sure your speakers are turned up. Best if watch at 'full screen'. Click below. I hope you enjoy this short video. https://www.youtube.com/embed/VImNBuJW3sQ?rel=0

Sorry CG,
These are not model RC planes.
The are Homebuilt designed by Vans RV planes. Built by your average airplane guy. They did it because of the cutbacks in military spending. They also did it on their own dime.

Back in the 80s I considered building a Vans RV4. Couldn't make the time commitment to do it so I bought a Cessna 182 instead. 4 or 5 of us would fly together in a group but nothing near the precision those guys have. I was always fun to hear the panic in a controllers voice when all our transponders popped up in such a tight little group.

Hey, Jim...what "clearance" or FAA approval do they have to get for that kind of formation fly over? We have a couple of busy but not metro airfields near my home and I see some of the homebuilt guys flying formation into and out of the area....I'm sure they don't just cut loose a bunch of 20 hour time builders to do that deal...just curious..

They really don't need any kind of FAA approval that I'm aware of. Just a bunch of guys going for a fun flight.
Most if not all of the Formation flights are self ruling. For instance today 100 Bonanza just flew from Rockford and landed at the big fly in at Oshkosh WI. These guys practice and are approved by the Bonanza flight to be able to do this.
We don't always need the Govment to tell us what we can do. Most of us are smart enough to think for ourselves.

Hey Guys,
Here is more info from one of the RV builder/pilots that flew in the formation.
He did a great job of putting the site together. More than 9,000 of these planes have been built by amateurs.
This is quite an accomplishment when you consider most of these guys are just Joe
Average. Not rich, Famous, or military although some could have been at one time or still active.
If you look at the Guys getting the planes ready you will see what the Average American can do. "•October 11, 2013 : Prepping for the Flyover."

We can learn to fly, build our own plane at a reasonable price then have the desire and skill to do an event for others to enjoy without asking for anything in return. "Only in America"
Not only did the KC, RV bunch put this together they raised 30K or so for Breast Cancer Awareness. Well Done Guys.
