Ok. I have full house loads and mid range loads (1200) fps or so. Now I want to load some real pleasant loads in the 900 fps range so I can use up some of my 255 gr Missouri Bullet SWC. I think there are 12 on brinnel hardness scale, so have to keep low. I have the 454 brass, so may as well use it, no crud rings from short 45 colt ammo, and want to use Unique, as I have a good supply of it. I don't seem to find any loads in any of the loading books I have. Anybody loaded 454 to this level with components mentioned? Will be using SR primers as that is what I have on hand. I find some loads that run around 14+ gr of Unique, but that is to fast for the soft lead bullets I have. Anyone got any idea where can find load data that will work for this? Something has to work. Load some 45 colt loadings with maybe 10% more powder than the 45 colt load says? thanks triker

Good place to start...and with a chrono, just go up til you get the magic number.

And for the record, I regularly get over a 1000fps with bh12 lead, without a hint of leading.

Trail Boss powder is what I use for soft loads. Hodgdon recommends a starting charge of 70% of available space below the bullet and a maximum charge of 100% without compression.
I have used it in cartridges from the .38 special to the .50-95 Winchester.
13 gr. under a 300 gr. cast bullet in the .45-70 is a fun plinking load that any kid can shoot all day long.

I've shot a lot of Unique in 45 Colt and it works really well. 9.5 grains with a 250 grain bullet gives 1000 fps chrono velocity and 8.5 grains gives 900 fps. The newest Lyman cast bullet manual show 454 Unique loads starting at 11.3 grains and 1100 fps with heavier bullets, but nothing in the velocity range you're looking for. If you care to extrapolate and experiment you should be able to achieve what you want, but you're most likely "on your own".

Triker,,, I hope that I have caught you in time. The small rifle primers you have will, may not work. I say this because of a lot of experience with 500mag. I do know that large rifle primers cannot be used in place of large pistol primers because of the depth of the pocket and the size of the primers is different. In other words, the large rifle primers are too thick and protrude out of the primer pocket. when loaded into a revolver they will not allow the pistol to cycle.
Second thing is that is a very large case to load up with powder and only get 900 fps Now the best solution is to use titewad as the powder,, since it is NOT position sensitive. Or you can just use a 45 colt case and load it to 900fps and it works easier. The Hornady 300 grain XTP is good for working at 900fps It opens up good if you wanted to use it for hunting. As John Linebaugh said the deer and antelope that where killed at 900fps were not any different than the ones that where killed at 1100 or 1200fps. They never knew.....
I did not mention Trail Boss because it is actually more expensive and Titewad is much more versatile. I used to do the same with the 500mag I would load it down to where it was actually fun to shoot. Loaded with 450gr lead with I think it was about 11 grains of Titewad, and the velocity was around 1100fps Me and friend could shoot all day long. And you know,,,it would still take anything in the 48.

Factory .454 brass is made to be used with small rifle primers. All data I have found for the .454 recommends small rifle primers. Small rifle and small pistol primers are the same dimensionally, the difference is in the thickness of the material that the primer cup is formed out of. Small rifle primers being made of thicker material to withstand the much higher pressures found in most rifle loads.

Although I prefer Trail Boss for light loads, almost any of the faster burning shotgun powders can do the job in fine fashion. The trouble is finding printed load date for the application. Since I don't own any pressure test equipment,I shy away from experimenting in that area. Have fun, stay safe.

I have some nice oregon trail 300gr. cast bullets f/s.

I bet they'd shoot real nice in your 454 at 900 to 1100 fps. Lol
