I think that there was a thread here about the 45 Special.
A cartridge that is rimmed and the same case length as the 45 ACP.
Is there a source of brass for this ctg?

I think what you are referring to is .45 auto rim. Designed to be used in revolvers chambered in .45 acp without having to use moon clips.

" MAGNUM " length as in 357MAG, 41MAG, 44MAG is 1.285" and this also includes the 45COLT case length.

No, what he was referring to is linked above, Cowboy .45 Special, basically made to squeeze more rounds into lever actions for Cowboy Action Shooting. Myself, I just used .45 Schofield brass and it got me to the number I needed. (for the ever so brief moment I was involved in it. lol)

The .45 Cowboy Special brass was designed to more efficiently load with light loads for better volumetric efficiency and consistent ignition. It also has the advantage of mitigating double charges with light loaded, fast burning powders in the overly large 45 Colt cases.

It's made to fit perfectly in a 45 ACP single action cylinder. Instead of headspacing on the case mouth like a 45 ACP case, it headspaces on the rim. You can use these same cases in a 45 Colt cylinder but because of the extra long chamber before the chamber throat, quite a bit of pressure is lost so velocity suffers as does accuracy.

These cases were designed specifically for 45 ACP single action cylinders. They will work just fine in S&W Mod 25s or Colt New Service without moon clips by head spacing like a normal 45 ACP case on the case mouth; however the rim will not touch the cyl face.

The 45 Spl has proper headspace in single action ACP cylinders because those cylinders have a normal 45 Colt rim headspace. Unlike ACP cylinders in double action cylinders which are designed to use moon clips (and can also use 45 Auto Rim cases), which of course have no need of clips in a single action revolver for extraction.

45 AR will not work in single action ACP cylinders because of its thicker rim.

I do, including the seating/crimping die if I don't use a tight crimp, which isn't needed on mild to medium loads, because the Colt die is too long to crimp the short cases.

If I want a tight crimp I use an ACP taper crimp die. If I want a roll crimp I use an ACP roll crimp die.

No reason that it can't. I had my NMBH .45ACP cylinder modified to accommodate .45AR. ACP cases still work:

About 0.030" has to come off the back of the cylinder and the center web has to be radius cut a bit to fit the AR rim.

AFAIK, ACP dies with .45LC shell holder.

Sure, you can modify the cyl, then AR will work. And now you can even use moon clips for a 'speed load' by swapping cylinders.

And you can still shoot 45 Spl.

I miss spoke in my post just above yours, don't know how I wrote that but it's been corrected.

Yes, the overall case lengths of the Spl, ACP & AR are all the same. So the 45 Spl has the correct headspace in a cylinder for the AR. The Spl headspaces on the case mouth and the thinner rim sits back off the cyl face.

In a word: none. There's no advantage. So that could be the end of discussion.

But in a more realistic larger context, especially in the case of CASS shooters, there's a big preference to load and shoot the same cartridge in the their rifles as in their revolvers . There are no ACP chambered rifles.

In addition it's preferred to have ammo that is not one gun specific. Shooters in general and CASS shooters don't just always shoot the same gun. The 45 Spl is a case that the shooter of a convertible 45 COLT/ACP revolver who is also the shooter of several 45 Colt revolvers, can shoot in all of his cylinders, both 45 Colt and ACP.
