.44 Special Load

Is there a factory load in .44 Special that is a SJHP or a semi-jacketed soft point? I just choose not to shoot cast bullets, or very few when I do. Also, has anyone here sent their Super Blackhawk to Magnaport
for the "Predator" conversion, if so how well do you like it? I just got a new stainless SBH with 4 5/8" barrel and am considering the conversion, less the barrel shortening of course, just don't know if I can justify the expense, as it is not cheap

THERE ARE 44SPL factory loads with 180 and 200 grain JHP bullets. They are designed to whack two-legged varmints and are pretty darned expensive.
There is NO reason for you to shy away from cast bullets any 44SPL sixgun. The ONLY real reason to own a 44SPL sixgun is to shoot the 429421 250GR .431" lead semiwadcutter bullets at 950FPS. DO NOT look down your snoot at that load either as it'll kill anything on this continent in direct proportion to how well you can shoot; anyone can shoot that load well indeed to boot !!!
The very same bullet will shoot like a million bucks in your 44MAG sixgun there also.
And so it goes...

Yeah Hornady loads their 180 and 200gr XTP's in factory loadings. The boutique loaders load a variety of jacketed 44spec loadings too, many with the same XTP's. As will said, why not consider lead for the 44spec ? Its not as difficult as some believe. The cost of a very basic loading outfit can be saved back in....say 500 rounds. This varies widely due to cost variances of factory fodder, all HIGH ! stevemb

I've been buying the LaserCast lead bullets and never have a problem with leading if the speed stays below 1,000 fps. They are only 10¢ a piece in 500 round boxes. And cool to shoot the same round as Elmer Keith.

I've shot the Blazer 200 grain ammo with what looked like Gold Dots (JHPs) --- They weren't too expensive due to the aluminum cases. My Hornady 200 grain XTP handloads are the most accurate of all the loads I've shot in my NM Blackhawk.

I have a 4 5/8" 44 mag super that I had Magnaported many moons ago.

My handloads are fairly stout and the Magnaporting sort of "defanged" the felt recoil and muzzle flip. That length of barrel works great with the Magnaporting. Of course this is purely subjective and your mileage may vary.

Check out Underwood Ammo..he has 200 gr. JHP for .44 Special rated at 1100 FPS.
I have used his 240 gr. FMJ and it worked well.

I had a Charter 2000 that I stoked with 200 gr JHP Blazer ammo. It was accurate and the term flying ashcan says it all.

If I absolutely had to use jacketed bullets, I would buy Hornady hollowpoints and reload.

PMC sells a 180 gr JHP conical bullet load in their Bronze line. I think it is a bit hot at 940fps? but reliable and accurate for me.
I get them locally for about $27 per 50 and the brass is very good.I haven't tested them in water jugs for expansion, but I'd bet they're fine for anything other than trophy-hunting at under 50 yards...
