44 Special choice

I want a ruger 44 Special, I am not sure if I should get the Vaquero 3 3/4 or the Blackhawk 4 5/8

I want it in Stainless, I like both but prefer the shorter barreled Vaquero. But if the Blackhawk was 3 3/4 I would buy that instead.

No real use for it, what do you think?

For a general purpose sixgun, I would go for adjustable sights. Though the sheriff's model would make an excellent concealed carry piece.

Thats my problem, good reason to own both.

I do like the idea of conceal carry, but it is less than an inch shorter.

Also I have many other guns for that purpose so I dont have a leading reason for eigther, other than I really like the shorter barrel.

I despise the Stainless Vaquero sight. In sunlight it as useless as tit's on a boar hog. MY choice would be easy. I carry mine in the field and they get shot too much to mess with bad sights. I do like the short barrel look just have no use for the sights.

If you plan on shooting the revolver, get the Black Hawk. It is MUCH more practical. You will not be limited on what you shoot (heavy bullet, light bullet, low velocity or high velocity).

The Black Hawk will be MUCH more useful.

How about the serial number off that Stainless 44 Special... There are "D" prefixed serial number 4 5/8 blue Bisleys out there that might match it...

Its a tough call, I have many revolvers. I have a three screw blackhawk with a 6.5 barrel 357/9mm, I have the old bigh Vaquero in 45 colt with the 3 5/8 barrel but its the big frame.

I like the idea of the shorter barrel of the Vaquero, but I would like it on the Blackhawk.

I also own two other 357's (so three total) and a Dan Wesson 44 mag, and a Uberti 4 3/4 45 colt. So I am not looking for the perfect justifiable revolver, just what I think I like better.

What I do like, is the first time a 44 Special is offered from Ruger, and I need one.

I have a Old Vaquero Birdshead 45 just like that one. The frame was bigger on those. I wish they made the 44 spl with the short barrel and birdshead grip

To make this more interesting I'll be the odd one out (thus far anyway). I've got the new shorty NV .44. I'm not "normally" a big fan of the bright stainless either, which is how I've somehow ended up with four such of different caliber and configuration stripes from .32 H&R to .44 Mag! Go figure. I will say Ruger does do a great "nickel" immitation with that finish, especially effective when accompanied by a nice set of custom grips. Mine already wears a set of Carl's beautiful hollys, and with a Montado hammer transplant is a perfect mate for my .357-you guessed it-Montado, which now wears a great set of Sack Peterson's elks. Have to now sell off a few things to pay for it all, but they make a great pair as intended!

In any event, I love the new Sheriff .44. Though I don't intend on concealed carry, I do like the NV's smooth, snag free lines--call it cowboy appeal or whatever, it's got it for me. In my hands, these also are intended for general carry, campin' and trailin' duty, and for the shorter ranges their overall formats suggest, I find the fixed sights' minute- of-critter accuracy to be fine. I have hit a few of my ss-finished guns, though not these yet--on the back sides of those front sites carefully with a black sharpie and that seems to help that aspect.

With the NV .44s, Ruger's saved me the aggravation/wait --and maybe "saved" $--of sending a .357 NV off for conversion. Only thing is, now that's itching to be sent off to become a .41 Mag, "just because," and since I don't really see Ruger "doing the right thing" on that. (As on the .44, never say never though, right?!) My other problem, I want the whole set of 44 Flattops too--for all the reasons folks have stated--but they'll have to wait on the NVs,...and I badgered Ruger too long for the .44 NV to not follow through now! Go with your gut. They're all good.

Here' a thought. Get the stainless 44 Blackhk and cut the barrel to the shorter length. You'll have the best of both worlds. And with stainless you won't even have to reblue the barrel after silver soldering the sight back on. You'll be the only one on your block with one.
