.44 carbine finish

My .44 carbine Mannlicher bluing should be done in a week or so. I would like the stock to have an original finish on it, but am unsure of what type it had.

Does anyone know what type of finish they originally came with?

I have a 44 carbine and the finish is definitely sprayed on maybe a poly

My guess would be Tung Oil.... just a couple coats to seal the wood, but not enough to fill the grain.

Chief, I think you are correct, the finish that I'm currently stripping off is a poly of some sort or another. But again, what I have is probably not the original finish, as this stock has been checkered after it left the factory.

Any suggestions as to what to reapply? I have some linspeed from a prior refinish, but I don't think it's what was originally used. This stock is like a fence post, so doing 10 + coats of linspeed would be overkill.

The last stock I refinished about January on a early 70's #1 I did with poly. I am set up to spray and that would make a factory looking finish(the finish they use today is a polyester resin based finish). This stock had very nice wood on it so I used spar urethane thinned with naptha and wiped it on and sanded with 600 wet or dry sandpaper and wiped it dry...set for a day and again for 3 days. If you are sanded well you can wipe thin coats on, drying in between, till you are satisfied with the look, orspray thin coats till you are happy...using dull or matte finish urethane. I like the urethane because it finishes hard and fairly chemical resistant. I am a woodworker by trade and been at it for over 40 years and this what I would suggest. The #1 on top is the refinished one the other 2 are original finishes.
