41 Blackhawk inbound

After years of wanting a 41 I broke down and ordered 6.5" Blackhawk today. Any favorite loads on the board?

Good choice Greyfox. I like shooting the Berry's plated bullets (210 gr) with Universal powder. Check the Hodgdon's website for the correct data.

It's a good shooting load that lets you know you have a magnum in your hand.

I have a Super Blackhawk but have mostly shot factory loads in it. I load 45s for a pair of 1911s and mainly shoot them. I have Unique on the bench and want to get something that come closer to filling the case/

A Max load in the 41 magnum can be a little jarring. I like a medium load of either 7.0gr of HP-38/W-231 or 11.0gr of Blue Dot and a 210gr Barry's bullet. Fine shooting. 8) 8)

19 grs. of 2400 a Sierra 210 grain JHP has always been very accurate out of my 6 1/2 inch Blackhawk.

Congrats on the purchase. You won't be disappointed. My 6.5" 41 Blackhawk is my favorite revolver.

I like 8 grains of Unique with Berry 210 gr FN. A good hot load is 20 grains H110 with 210 gr Hornaday XTP.

Another 41 lover here. 2400 and AA#9 and a Berry's 210 Plated run pretty good through my 41s. I also keep velocities between 1100 and 1200 per Berry's advise.

Don't mean to hyjack this thread but I'm cuirous. You guys using Berry's plated, what type of crimp are you using, what dies?
Getting a plated bullet crimped in a magnum is tricky at best, too little and you get bullet movement, too much and you cut the jacket.
Wish Lee or someone would make a taper crimp die to use on plated. Lees FCD for revolver calibers are actually roll crimps.

You have to be careful with the crimp as you have noted. I use a Lee FCD and trim my cases the first time to get a consistent length for consistent crimping. I also chamfer and deburr the case to make sure the inside of the case mouth is smooth and won't cut the plating. Finally the crimp should be only enough to hold the bullet firmly. (light - medium) 8) 8)

Not necessarily, check these out. I love the 41 Trooper's in my Redhawk 5.5" 41 mag. Can't give you my load details right now as all my stuff is in FL and I'm up in the Peoples Republic of Illinois presently.

I cast two differant bullets for the 41 mag. A Lyman 410459 and a LBT style 250 gr LFNGC.

Use 20gr of H110/W296 under the LBT and it is scary accurate.

Still playing with the 410459. Trying 16gr of 2400. Will run both loads over the chrony on Monday and see what they are doing.

Just gave my oldest son a graduation present of a distributor exclusive SS Bisley in 41 mag with a 5 1/2" barrel. Will see how it does on Monday.

I shoot that same 250gr LBT over 15gr IMR4227
my 41 Special power level load.
That 250gr over 20gr of H110 is a stout recoil load that I have shot ok with like you, amazing accuracy, but was hesitant to put that load on here lest somebody unexperienced ends up with a hammer spur dent in their forehead.

Luv those MBC 215's in my Ruger 41 too! I'm loading them with 7.5 gr Unique. The perfect 41 load for me at the range, with no barrel leading.

Right now I am tinkering around with 16.0 grains of 2400 and a 215 cast bullet as an everyday load.

My favorite is 7.5 grains of Unique topped with a 215 H&G cast bullet with a BHN of about 12. The load was developed by Elmer Keith.

That's super close to the load I ran for many years. Switched from Unique to Hodgdon's Universal a couple years back. All the good qualities of Unique without all the black soot to clean. LOL

No soot to clean with the new Unique. They changed the formula a few years ago, and it burns similar to other powders now. I've used Universal, but went back to Unique. Too many classic load recipies, and I found accuracy better with Unique too.

I am using the 41 trooper over 8 gr. of unique in my 5 1/2 in. This gives me around 1100 fps with no leading. This is a fun load out of the Ruger but still enough for hunting. This is also an economical way to shoot the 41.
