Anyone think we will ever see a Ruger 1911 in .40 S&W.

I'd be first in line!

Speaking of that, and your sig line, makes me wonder...why not design a rimless version of the .44 Special for semi auto pistols?

Would love to see a Ruger in 10mm, but in my opinion, Ruger will come out with a LWT-CDR in 9mm first. I won't be holding my breath for either yet. Ruger is selling both SR1911 models as fast as they can make them w/o tooling up for a new caliber now. JMHO!

.40 S&W 1911's can be fussy feeders. Pumping out mass produced guns, it may be more trouble than Ruger wants.

Used to have a .44 Automag - I'm guessing that's not what you had in mind. :D

The mag and mag well are both a bit too long to be ideal for the .40 S&W.
OTOH, I've still got a .41AE conversion kit and 100 rounds of Samson brass tucked away somewhere.

I dont think Rugers frame making is strong enough to handle hot .40's.
Another reason for no 10's. Gun would have to weigh too much.

Sliclee: If you are referring to the Ruger 1911 frame, I have to disagree with you regarding their strength to handle a hot 40. I own two Colt Delta Elites in 10MM (one blued, and the other SS) and the Delta Elite frame is identical to Colts 45 frame. The way Colt handles the 10MM round is with a dual recoil spring system, one inside the other and a different type recoil spring guide that has a nylon buffer sandwiched between 2 pieces of metal. I'm not a rocket scientist by any means, but I do believe could build a 40 or 10 if they desire. Ruger would need to catch up on their 1911 back orders before introducing a new caliber.

lr- you cant compare forged metal to cast iron

ruger has quite a bit of trouble with the 1911. They are in the stage of send them out no matter, we'll fix them later.

When Colt first made the 10 frames were cracking because metal wasnt strong enough. A 45 frame is not that strong.
I remember testing hot ammo 45acp a Rem 185+P the third shot the slide went too far back and cracked stuck.
You cant compare a 45 at 1000 to a 10 at 1500
I have 2 10's from Colt in polished SS. They have automatic bullet tracking. I must have at least 70K rounds thru them apiece. They are perfect.

I would like to see verification that Ruger is having trouble with their 1911's. I have two, a SR911 and a SR1911CDR-LWT and haven't had a single problem with either. Neither have two of my buddies with SR1911's also. You smoking those fumy cigarettes again?

If you have a cast iron Ruger it's probably worth a lot of money to a collector.

Pinetree castings (Ruger) manufactures cast 1911 frames for other 1911 manufactures, who DO produce 10mm. Versions. No problems yet. So you are wrong. The cast 1911 frames do hold up to 10mm. Loads.

DA=if and when they make a 40 or 10 the first shot will be that g-d damed BUG of yours. Lee

The only problem with that is then you will be the one with the hole in your screen.

I've had one of Colt's Gold Cup Elites 1911's in .40 S&W, one of the very few they made. Nice gun, but I've never been able to get it to equal an even fairly good .45. Tried two gunsmiths who worked the rails, link, bushing etc., also a variety of handloads and factory ammunition but it's never really perked. Don't get me wrong, it's easily a 2.5" at 25 yds pistol, but just won't give the match grade accuracy that's fairly easy to obtain with a .45.

I like the caliber, like the variety of bullet weights and loadings, and have several other pistols that do fairly well with it, but not to match grade accuracy. My two Sigs and a Glock will equal the Colt with selected handloads... quite probably, I never found the guru gunsmith capable of tweaking it just right. As it stands, I've probably ruined its collector value with the work I've had done, but it still in my safe...

Ruger's done extremely well with both of its 1911 offerings...both of mine, while not match grade in accuracy, will do an hones 2" with my handloads, and are probably capable of better with some minor tweaking....but can Ruger do it with a .40 S&W chambering...gotta wonder...Pic of the Gold Cup .40 below.

Rod

Rodfac pretty looking gun. I was recently looking thru all selling sites for a 1911 in 40 but no luck.
I do have a .40 H&K P7M10, ,that when brand new in the box when I bought it I had 4 boxes of hot HP to test. No cleaning, no removing preservative, no lube.
each mag got two of each, 8 rounds, 15 yds blasted away no stop, all within an inch, not a bobble. When I finished, took of my ears and a man behind me was smiling as I said look at that as he said what else do you expect from H&K.

PS stil looking for a 1911 in .40

Yeah...DA is the one and only person that I ever FOEd here or anywhere else. It was not because of anything he posted, but the bug "bugged" me. 8)

Who "needs" a 1911 in a caliber between 9mm and .45ACP?

I agree, for me at least. The only reason I see for it, is if I got free .40cal ammo from work. Or I guess if I was already invested in .40cal, and just didn't want to add a caliber. Which is the reason I don't and will never have a .40! :D

With that said, if somebody wants one, I hope they find it and love it. Life is short get what you want.

The govt itself is going to destroy the 45 caliber 1911 pistol.
It is going to use hollow point ammo; it has notified the proper who ever and doesn't care that HP's won't work well or at all against heavy outdoor clothing.
They will probably do the same as Clinton did with Beretta and NATO ammo just to destroy the 1911 myth. That is all.
