38 special GP100

Just a couple of weeks ago I posted looking for grips for the GP100 in 38 special...I thought the frame was a bit smaller than the "standard" GP100 in 357...there was lots of discussion and when I measured things all GP's are alike as far as frame dimensions....the grips on the 38 special model are the smaller grips....

Now as to the gun, the one I have is a 3" barrel and lots of folks won't believe it's really a 38 special GP100...want to call it a Security Six, etc...it's a GP all right...stamped that way and stamped for 38 special .... the one I have is about 8 or 10 years old and it's thought they were manufactured for a limited production and used in situations where a 357 was not "authorized" like some security situations, etc...They are a model GP100...GPF831...mine is s/n 74-209xx and cost $389 new in the box from the dealer plus all the taxes, dros, etc.

The prices discussed in the post shown are from 2008 or so and I have no idea what new ones (if still made) are worth...I paid $425 total from a private party for mine unfired and in the box with all the goodies...it's been fired now.

I suspect the 3 inch is rare, but there have been plenty of 38 onlys made. Right now, Davidsons shows a 99+ inventory on the 4 inch 38 in blue and a few in SS. They are not catalog items and Davidsons isn't hyping them as a distributor exclusive. Again, probably contract overruns. A couple have appeared on gunbroker for under $400 NIB.

In 38 I'd rather have the 3 inch than the 4, but the 4 is a close second choice. Here is the Davidsons inventory pic:

I bought the gun because it was a really nice little 3" and it was an older gun (2003 as I recall), and a GP100 to boot....I shoot it a lot and really enjoy it....I also have a couple of 357 GP100's and regularly shoot them...once in a while I make the big bang with the 357 but usually shoot +p load strength 38 specials in the 357's...I don't think if I were to buy a new GP that I'd restrict myself to a 38 special only....as long as the 357 is really kept clean after firing 38 specials in it it's no issues and I think more flexible than the straight 38 special...In one thread I'd started about grips for the 38 it was pointed out that the smaller compact grips are available for the 357 and make it a real dream to shoot for folks with smaller hands....It was noted that all GP100 frames are the same and so the various size grips will fit any of them...
