38-40 Buckeye performance

Hey Guys
I have a Buckeye 38-40/10mm that I fitted with a bisley grip frame. I have worked up a accurate load of 9gr Unique 180 gr cast bullet that shoots very well. I would like to hunt deer with it this fall. Do you guys think this is enough for Nebraska Whitetails? Does anyone have any 1st hand experience hotrodding the 38-40.

I don't have experience with that specific load so I can't comment for sure but it seems to me it would do the trick. Any idea what velocity you're getting?

I use a 180 gr Hornady XTP 10mm bullet over a very healthy load of 2400 and get it really hummin' in my 4 5/8" Old Model Blackhawk. It is a very accurate load and a lot of fun to shoot. I figure I'm pushing 1250 fps with it.

I don't have a chrony but in this articlehttp://www.sixguns.com/tests/tt3840.htm Taffin says 1166 fps.

With that XTP are you putting a cannalure on it? How are you crimping it?

John's article is a good one!

No cannelure on it, I just crimp it tight, with a Lee Factory Crimp die, and I've not had ANY problems with it at all. It is great bullet, even greater for the 38-40.
