This subject was discussed somewhere else not long ago but I can't find the thread. The ratio of 7.5 to 10.5 was about even, with a few more 10.5" guns shipped as I recall.

The highest serial number produced was 600-16314, so a little over 16,000 were made. A little over 11,000 were shipped. With over 20 years of recording serial #'s the ratio of 10 1/2" to 7 1/2" is running about 1.1 or 1.2 to 1 in favor of the 10 1/2". The one thing that is increasing the collectability/rarity of the Max is the fact that custom pistol smiths are cutting them up day after day. I personally know how many one of the popular smiths has converted and I will have to say that the Max population is slowly shrinking! And regardless of what some around here may tell you, I do not own all of the Maximums! :shock: :shock: Coogs.

I thought I read somewhere that the numbers were 60% 10.5" and 40% 7.5". Whatever the ratio is , this is one that Ruger needs to bring back to production!

Not sure if anyone has a definitive answer on the barrel ratios. Coogs probably has the most extensive serial number list going. But I too had heard 60% 10.5", 40% 7.5".
I own quite a few stretch-frame SAs and I've found the best balancing length to be 9.0". That's a custom proposition since Ruger Maxs, Sevilles, and El Dorados never shipped with nines.

Odd. I have personally only seen 7.5" Maxes down here in Texas. I sure enjoy mine, but I have to add that my DW 740 Supermag is more fun to shoot many rounds out of. I will actually shoot them both on Saturday!

Back when I was a youngun, we'd put long barrels on short guns. (Note my avatar!) Nowadays, they're puttin' shorter barrels on longer guns.
