how hard are the max rounds to find and going rate?

They can be difficult to find.

The original ones I have seen for sale lately went for $40 for a box of 20.

A neighbor has six boxes for 150.oo 158 gr semijack hps if anyone is interested

158gr not too hard to find if you keep your eyes open but the 180gr is a lot tougher. About $40 a box is average on the web sites.

I paid $60 for three 158gr full boxes at gun show earlier this year from a guy just walking around with them in his hand. He couldn't find a dealer table to take them for cash money, so I did. And I think there was a 3/4 full box of 45acp that went with it too.
Best buy was from a pawn shop / gun shop that has a $7 sticker on the box from back when they were new, and he honored it.

Took a look in my new Graf&son catalog. They show a PCI 180gr. sjhp box of 50 for $39.00.
Have no knowledge of PCI ammo but the bullet is good.
I started reloading many moons ago to save $$$ now I save LOTS of money. You can reload a couple hunderd for $39.00

Do you reload? In my opinion, that's the only way to go on the Max.

When I got my DW I reloaded all my ammo so it was a given that I would reload the max. I bought between 3 and 400 brass a couple years ago when a guy in TN got out of shooting his max.

If you do reload, try 4227 or AA1680 with a 200 - 210 grain cast slug. Every one of my Maximums loves that combination.

Some of the early "Factory" ammo was notorious for "forcing cone" erosion.

I'd stick with handloads.........
