.35 Whelen loads

Reloder 15 would be my first choice also. Some of the data out there list up to 60 grains with the 200 grain bullet. Start low and work up. Although I have not shot my #1A in 35 Whelen much, it does recoil enough to get your attention, particularly with the 225 bullets. The 225 Sierra BT and the Nosler Accubond ought to be as good as it gets in the Whelen. I use the various 200 gr bullets in my rifles. Something noteworthy I encountered with my #1 using new R-P brass. The rounds went so far in the chamber that the rifle would not fire. Apparently, Remington missed the headspace measurements on this bag of brass. My rifle fired some of my older ammo made out of 270 brass without a hitch. If I were using new R-P brass, I would prime one or two and see if they fire before I went any farther. I'll shoot mine in my M77 with it's claw extractor to hold them close to the bolt face. Once fireformed they should work fine. Bob!

In my 77RS, I have had good luck with 54 grains of Rl15 and the Hornady 200 grain RN. One of the most accurate loads for my Whelen. It's just like a 35 Remington. If sighted 1' high at 100, it will be 5" low at 200 and way down to 20" low at 300. Nice thing, for me at least the POI at 100 is the same for my 225 grain load, although that one has a much flatter trajectory than the lighter load. You can shoot a couple boxes of the lighter load in a tee shirt on a summer afternoon. It is also deadly on groundhogs. This was safe in my gun, can't say whether it would be in yours.
