Many love it, some hate it, others are indifferent. It's too powerful, not powerful enough, too long, too short, & a host of other things. But to me, it's just plain pretty.

It was once stated , by whom I do not know, that if the 30-06 could be erased from every ones mind and then be re-introduced, it would be the most renouned cartridge ever. It will take anything from "meeces to mooses". I have its kid brother the 25-06. I only hunt "meeces" I don't hunt "mooses". If I had the bucks I would have a "custom" 30-06 built. Ruger #1 with a 26" Heavy BULL barrel.

Most of my affections have gone to the 308, but I load for the 30-06 too.

There is no doubt the 308 is a great round. I once had a 700 Remington Varmint chambered for that Winchester round. I shot hi-power silhouettes with the rifle for a couple years but to work I had to go. Wish I still had it.

The 308 would be my 2nd as a "parent" round. It too did produce some nice "off spring", the 358 Win. especially.

The only '06s I have are Garands, and they keep my press humming as they are always hungry. I have always done it on a single stage in the past, but just got a Hornady LNLAP to really turn the ammo out now.

I've had my M1 30 Caliber carbine since I bought at out of a barrel, at a military surplus store, when I was 14 or 15 years old, in 1965 or 1966! I only paid $12.00 or $14.00 for it! Can't remember. You could order a gun from a comic book, or magazine back then, and age did not matter! Don't believe? Look in a Classic comic book.
They had tanks, motorcycles, handguns or riffles, jeeps, whatever you can think of! That was prior to the BATF(& now E), and EPA, that Nixon started!
In 2012, I bought my 30-06 M1 Garand . Now I have Little Brother 30, and Big Bother 30-06! I can hold the Fort with those 2! If someone comes in my house, I have an 18.5 inch 12 gauge with slugs and 00 buck. I also have a S and W Governor for closer quarters.
Garand 30-06 takes 1st place, although the 30 caliber Carbine is a lot of fun to shoot!
My, how times have changed. Some people think if you own any gun, or guns, your mentally unstable. I have had the 'PLEASURE' of changing 2 peoples minds. I taught them that guns are only dangerous in the hands of the Criminals and the Mentally Challenged. I took them out, showed them that safety is the FIRST thing to learn, and then let them shoot a 22 riffle. They were hooked instantly! I then had them take a NRA safety course, before I let them shoot a few of my different guns. That was worth more than GOLD, when you can show people that guns are fun, and guns are safe, when handled properly.
My normal carry is a SR1911. Sometimes a Tomcat 32, or my 738 TCP. My Glock 19 is a great gun, but the 45 is MORE POWER!
Now, how many of you men are MAN enough to admit your wife is a better shot than you. I admit it PROUDLY! Her daddy raised her in NRA competition shooting in the early 1960's, and she still has her trophies to prove it! I don't worry to much about her being able to take care of some THUG. She's a pistol pack-in mama!
The Garand is such a fine 30-06 firearm! The Garand is the only long gun I need!

My only '06 is a Savage, and was chosen for many of the same reasons everybody's already touched on, and I doubt I'll ever need anything bigger... Unlike so many calibers, it seems happy w/ bullets from 110 gr to 180 gr, and can go to 220 gr easily enough. Not many cartridges have that kind of range...
As for "Mama" outshooting me, there's no wife in the picture, but I've known a handful of ladies who could kick my bum, and never had a problem w/ it. Several of 'em, just like Wise Guy's wife, had Daddies who started 'em early and taught 'em well, so it stuck!
Best one I've seen wasn't even a lady I knew, but happened at the range. There were several guys, and one beautiful girl, in the group. The guys were cops, and y'all know how the chest pounding can get in such a situation, 'specially if there's a lady to try to impress.
Anyway, the woman was somebody's g/f, not a LEO, and did the "girly" thing just perfectly when they were going to show her how to shoot a pistol at a 7 yard silhouette target. She quickly earned the moniker "Officer Ultra Babe" among those of us watching behind the fence, because as soon as she started pulling the trigger, that "girly" thing went away, and holes started showing up in the paper BG's head. When the mag was empty, she went back to "Oh, that was just beginners' luck!" They gave her a second mag, and all but one round went in the BG's head again. Noticing the slide wasn't locked back, the guy "helping" her reminded her she had one more round.
"Oh, I do?" Bang! It went right into the BG where NO guy ever wants to get shot...
They took the gun away from her! Meantime, behind the fence, we all agreed some little girl's Daddy had done a GREAT job!
