.270 Win cast bullet loads...

I have a couple of old Winnies, models 54 & 70 with many thousands of rounds worth of "experience" down their bores. Think I'll start treating the old veterans a little more gently by shooting cast bullets in them. Anybody been down this trail and have a little savvy to share?

Bucks I've had good luck with 170gr cast bullets from a lyman mold in the 303 savage this past year. I tried a few of the same in my 303 Brit but they were undersized and shot poorly. I have several hundred left and plan on loading them a 30-06 and 30-30 I just haven't had a lot of time. I've been learning to cast good 9mm 125gr Hollow points and have been lurking most of the year over at the Cast boolit forum. I bought a MP Mold after reading so much about it on that site. They are pricey molds but after casting 20lbs of 1:20 lead I believe it was money well spent. Good luck I haven't tried .270 yet let us know how it works out.

I have seen a few guys cast for the .270ww but very few. It just never seemed to be very popular within the crowd. Gas checks may be hard to find also.
You want to shoot on the cheap. Maybe the bullets produced for the 6.8 would serve your purpose at a bit of savings.
If you do try cast I highly suggest a good bore cleaning is in order. I have found a lot of older guns tend to have as much carbon fouling as jacket material in the bore as anything. Even worse is carbon gilding metal carbon metal etc. that can be a bear to get out. Wipeout has done an excellent job for me on such guns. The electronic bore cleaners also work well.

The Lee manual has a good amount of info on cast bullets in modern rifle cartridges, 308, 30-06 & others. You may not see the 270 Win listed, but with these low pressure loads one could use 'reasonable interpolation'.

Just an idea, maybe you've already been there.
