.22lr ammo - available

I think all of us are tired of the "where's the .22lr?" Well, I found some, at least around
here. Dick's (YES, I am also one of those that distinctly dislike their marketing) has a
fairly good supply. I'm not sure if this is just the store in the town where I live or not, but
it's worth a look-see.

Yesterday afternoon I went into the local Dick's store to look around. - - I have not bought
anything from them in over two years. - - - I do, however, look around about every six to
eight months, "just in case". Well, you can imagine my surprise when I heard a guy come
in and ask for .22lr and the clerk reached down (almost at the floor level) and pulled
out two boxes. Not only were there the two, but by my best guesstimate, several hundred
boxes of American Eagle brand .22lr . . . . at $2.49/each. LIMIT 2, on the shelf!

Like I said, I'm not sure if this is just my local store or if it is more wide spread, but if
you are short on .22lr AND there is a Dick's store close to you, it's worth a look.

Humm . . . . . I wonder if our displeasure at them is registering in their pocket book
and they are trying to bring more business in?

I have found that you have to ask for them in a lot of places. They are being kept behind the counter for a couple of reasons. Those that come into the store and clean out the supply don't see them on the shelf and leave. If you ask, they produce them. If I hit the local Dunham's at the right time I can pick up two boxes (limit) for the $2.79.
I was there one time when the "hawks" hit. The first guy came in,... saw the shelfs being stocked and pulled out his cell phone and made a quick call. Ten minutes later half a dozen guys walk in and buy their two boxes each. Then they come back after a few minutes and buy two more. As many trips as they can until they clean out the supply. I talked to the guy behind the counter and he says it is the same crew week-in and week-out. They have been doing this for over a year.
I don't see the attraction or the reason. I have plenty of .22 ammo for my needs. I did pick up a 17 hmr for critter control on the farm and I can get that ammo all day long.

The Dicks Sports is way over on the other side of town and it is within a mile of a Cabella's and a Gander Mountain (the Gander Mountain store has been redesigned for nothing but firearms and hunting stuff), but it is located at a big mall,... and I'm not a mall rat...

The local firearms dealer has a shelf full of .22 ammo,...for almost $5 a box. I don't need them that bad....

I just don't see what the attraction is.

I dunno 'bout alla that...maybe, maybe not...or maybe they just got lucky & had something you wanted/needed...

I do know in the last month I've scored 2 500 rd bricks worth of Hornady 30gr V-Max 22 mag (my 10/22mag was getting starved!) for 10.99/50rds, and in the last 2 months, (2) 1400rd pails of Rem Golden Bullet @ $59.49 ea., @ the local Fleet.

Even with 5% state tax added...i figure those good prices. Coulda bought more (they had it, and it stayed on the shelf longer'n usual), but not the way i like to do things.

ARE things getting better? Centerfire, yes, definitely, as far as availability...tho the prices are not what they were, not quite. As to 22...i dunno; not quite, i'd say, not yet (tho if i needed it that bad, the LGS i spoke of in an earlier thread, has had, has always had it...@ 40-50 bucks a brick :shock: )

But i'll say this: it's only a matter of time, b4 it happens, again. Those that get caught with their shorts around their ankles this time, and shoot & don't gather a stash, big or small, depending on need & ability (it adds up fast bought a box @ a time over time; that's how i have had to do it for many MANY years)...no sympathy.

You have a gun? NEEDS. AMMO. That's part of the deal. PLEASE Plan Accordingly.

Academy had the same ammo/same price recently. They also receive larger quantities but you have to get there at opening time to see/buy some.

What surprised me was that the sales guy said they have been in stock for
several weeks. :shock:

I have been watching slickguns.com & seeing deals on .22 pop with more regularity recently. I'm not looking to buy though because I scored 2000 rounds of winchester .22 in a dry storage box when Gander Mountain had a grand opening a few months ago. It was $140.00 but at least I know I've got enough .22 to last a while.

By chance I walked by the counter in our local W-M three weeks ago and there were several 100rd. boxes of Winchester Super X. Two guys lined up at the counter waiting to but their limit.
Fast forward to last Wednesday night and there were a dozen or so Winchester 225rd packs on the same shelf. One guy in line bought the limit of three and tried to have his 12 year old buy three more. He was a bit perturbed when the clerk told him no. I asked the clerk about their supply and he said it was still spotty but the week before they had the same shipment last upwards of three days. Maybe, just maybe it's getting better. Been seeing fewer ridiculous ads in the classified for $60-80 bulk packs too. Who knows.
LGS Friday, shelf loaded with Blazer but still a 2 box limit at 3.99 a 100.

Tom saw some Blazer on the shelf in Illinois a couple of weeks ago for $2.86/box. He bought a carton for his friend who's always looking for 22 ammo(twin 10 YO boys will do that to a man).

I went into the local Gander Mtn. store to check the used gun dept. One guy that I know that works there asks he if he can help and I reply "just looking" and turn to leave when he asks "Aren't you even going to buy any .22s?" To which I asked "Do you have some?" They had Federals for $19.99 for 325 or Mini Mags for $29.99. Not a great price but a lot better than at the gun shows.

Just three weeks ago I was in my local Walmart and they had 300 count bricks of CCI 22 LR. Limit 3. Price was $19.97 each.

I wasn't in bad shape for .22 but have several friends that are. So, I bought 3 bricks. Needless to say friends were glad to get them for my cost.

I'm understanding from others that .22 availability at Walmarts in bigger cities is better than in the more rural Walmarts. So you might check your urban area stores.
