223 choice

I am planning to buy a 223 just mainly for paper punching probably out to 300 yards;
.I thought about this rifle

Another suggestion would be the M77 Varmint/Target with a 26-inch barrel. But it weighs 1.5 lbs more than the Predator.

I believe the predator model has the medium weight barrel similar to the 25-06 , and the magnums like the 7mm and 338. Thats plenty stout. I have a MkII in a 25-06 and it shoots like a dream. That set up in a 223 would be a pussycat to shoot.
The only thing I'd suggest is shop somewhere besides Cheaper than Dirt...

I think that you would be satisfied with that rifle for punching paper. The 1 : 9 twist rate should be find for 55 to 62 grain ammunition.

Have you considered what type of optic you would go with?

The 1 : 9 twist rate should be find for 55 to 62 grain ammunition.

It should handle a bit heavier than that. Sierra's 69 gr Boattail Matchking Tipped bullet is about as long as a 69 gr bullet gets and they say a 7" to 10" twist is recommended.

I have ordered my rifle today.All I plan to do with it is punch paper.Not sure what scope to put on it.The max i will be shooting is 300 yards.I would appreciate any advice.

Thin thin crosshairs or a fine crosshair with a target dot along with enough magnification so you can see your target. I have a few with 1/8" dots that are smaller than a pdogs eyeball at 300 yards. If your crosshairs are too thick you will get frustrated pretty fast! At times I will put a hole in the target and I like to be able to choose what part of the 22 hole I want to aim for.

As far as brand , thats pretty wide open. I have a lot of Weaver Grand Slams and like the 6-20 power on my varmint rifles. Any more power than that and I cant hold still enough. Leupold , Burris , Nikon , and Vortex are hard to beat too.

I prefer fast focus eyepeices but have a side focus that isnt too bad either. You'll also want an adjustable objective.

If i choose a scope with a 42 mm objective lens will i have to buy higher rings.

I have a 40mm on my 25-06 and your 223 should have the same barrel profile. It barely fits but the Grand Slam scopes have the rubberized adjustment rings that are probably a tad thicker than others at the bell end. Scope length has a lot to do with wether or not you can get the bell out far enough past the chamber area and over the narrower taper on the barrel. So its a definate maybe! If it was on a rifle with the standard barrel profile it would.

My Savage has a 1:9 twist and works just fine with 69 grain bullets - - I've used Sierra and Nosler, and they both give me 3/4 inch 5-shot groups. Best load is a Sierra 60 grain Varminter (flat base) - - 3/8 inch 5-shot groups.

That would be a good choice for a paper punch. At a much higher price I am hoping to find a No. 1 in 223.

Other than just being a top shelf optic, the new VX-2 has great color correction.
I have seen them online for under $500 with a good search effort.
I dream of replacing more [or all] of mine with one.
For anything less than a computer scope, I am a Leupold die-hard fanatic though,
somewhat biased.
