Anyone know where I can purchase 22 cal shot shells by mail? I need them for dispatching squirrels in a live trap. They seem to be impossible to get now.

I'd not count on them being available for a while given their niche application and current demand.

I had an encounter with a big red squirrel a few years ago. Rascal got into the basement down the chimney. Finally cornered him on top of a cabinet. Put the red dot on the Mark III on his left eye and a 35 grain hp took care of that. He was about to go for my throat so I had no choice: him or me.

Bucket large enough to submerge the trap will work . Gonna be tough to find anything.22
I can only suggest switching to a pellet gun or maybe Aguila Colibri(which if you don't already have are as unobtainium as shot shells)

I went into the Ranch and Home store in Kennewick Washington last night and was surprised to see 44, 38, and 22 shot capsule ammo. In addition to the CCI stuff they also had the 50 round boxes of 22 shot with the crimped ends. I have not see this stuff in years. I broke down and bought a box of 50 for $13. Long ways from you but I guess some ammo is still finding it's way out to the retail shelves.

I do have a nice Gamo Bone Collector with a scope but as I said it's useless in this instance. I also have a Crossman "American Classic" single shot pump pistol. I was able to get some CCI Quiet-22 ammo at my local store. Buy it's still 710 FPS. Still stronger than I need.
But I came up with a new idea for dispatching the squirrels in the cage. I just ordered a "Stun Pen" My trap is a "Squirrelinator". It's 22" X 22" and only 4" from top to bottom. Usually it takes like a minute to get my single six barrel over the squirrels head while he's running around. But using the stun pen, I should be easily able to stick it through the bars and ZAP the squirrel anywhere on him. Then I will dispatch them quickly with the gun.

Just add a touch of peanut butter to the end of the barrel. When it settles into licking the barrel, BANG---problem solved.

Gun shop in Ontario Oregon currently has the CCI .22lr shot ammo. I did not look at the price. Store name is Outdoorsman, 541-889-3135.

It's not whether they will ship or not. It's a California law that one can not purchase ammo by mail order. The place where I thought they accepted my order emailed me that they will only ship to an FFL. I don't have one in my area that will accept shipment.

When I trap grey squirrels I shoot them with a pellet rifle from a few yards away. Never had a problem hitting them. When I trap red squirrels they go crazy in the trap and apparently give themselves a heart attack.
Thanks for clarifying, I missed that you are in CA. I was going to go buy some and offer ship to you somehow. Sounds like we would both be in trouble for that.

I set two leghold traps for squirrels in my backyard. Either I control the population, or they get destructive. Once they made a hole in my kitchen roof! With city ordinances against shooting, I simply dip them trap and all in a bucket of water. Drowns the critters and washes the traps for reuse. I put extra strong chain in those traps. The squirrels go bonkers when caught. I once had to "pacify" one with a baseball bat. Never again - I broke the trap.
I tried cooking one of those squirrels a few years ago, but the meat was terrible. City squirrels feed on garbage and that´s how they taste.
