1955 Blackhawk .357

My grandfather gave me a first year Blackhawk .357 serial number 1180. It was a gift for refinishing his first gen High Power, and I was looking for some more information on it. It appears to be nickel plated with non-factory stag grips. It has been neglected since the 60s so it is a shooter, but I think it's a beaut.

Hi Welcome to the forum yes a nice shooter nickel plated and the grip frame polished out looks like the front sight may have been worked on your grandfathers gun makes it PRICLESS

welcome to the Forum, nice picture of a fine 'classic'...from the picture, to us it almost appears to have been "polished" ( the bluing removed) we've seen this from time to time, and one can get the bare metal to really shine if done right, and take your time...........
on the other hand over the years many folks have had their guns chrome or nickel plated, so until you 'check' ( easy enough to do, just apply a bit of cold blue in an 'out of the way ' place and see if the surface 'darkens", voila, it is bare metal)
as Gramps said above being your grandfathers,it is indeed 'priceless'.....good luck and enjoy it.

A NICE piece of family history. A good shooter grade Type I, and likely a sweet feeling gun. I also agree with rugerguy in that it looks like it may be just polished to bare matal vs. nickle plated. Of course, that could be the angle & lighting.

Thanks for the welcomes and responses. I'm almost positive it's plated, but it would have been done in the early '60s. My grandfather gave a guy a $50 dollar loan, and he got the gun as collateral. I guess the guy never paid him back, so it's been sitting in a box for 55 years. It's my first revolver, as I'm into more practical firearms, but it's a welcomed piece to my collection.

Ah okay, thanks. It does have the correct "wavy serrations" on the front sight. I know very little about these, just what I've researched on here, so any input is always welcomed!

Now I have the urge for a stainless lever action in .357 for a matching set. Also, a nice dark leather belt rig is in order so I can play cowboy and targets.

Since the grip frame shows bare aluminum, I would bet that the rest has had the bluing polished down to base metal as Dan suggested.
