1863 Sharps Carbine

Like most of us here I have other interests when it comes to firearms. Love the old lever action Winchester’s, Colts, Berettas and Sharps.
I just picked up this old 1863 Sharps carbine in excellent shape. It has a cool history as it was issued originally to a Union soldier and he was either captured or killed on the battlefield. The Confederates claimed it off the battlefield, and at that time, had an armory in Richmond where reclaimed weapons were refurbished and sent back into battle. This rifle was refurbished by an inspector there by the name of Lewis Zimmer. The rifle has his recognizable Z stamp for his last name. The rifle was then re-issued to a confederate soldier or captured by the Union or seized at the end of the war by the Union at the armory.

No this one came from an older guy out of St. Clair Michigan. Said he has had it in his collection tor a long time.

Thanks for the comments…. no, won’t be shooting it. In fact to be honest this Sharps will be part of large professionally done shadow box with it and a Bev Doolittle picture. We have an office where several of her pictures are hung along with several rifles, antiques and handguns. If you’re not familiar with Bev Doolittle she uses camouflage in her drawings that are mostly animals and forest scenes. The particular work that will be part of the mounting is called “Two Indian Horses”. It is one of her rare pieces depicting a line of picketed calvary horses and two Indians are attempting to steal several horses. A calvary soldier is walking off carrying his 1863 Sharps Carbine.
