10/22 Fail to Feed problems... Need some help.

First off, howdy! I have done quite a bit of searching and reading. I have been troubleshooting this for about a week.

I am getting a F2F on every round, multiple different factory 10rd mags, multiple different mfg bullets. This thing would eat anything and everything before I messed with it. (Lesson learned!)

I installed a new firing pin (power custom Ti) and a drop in trigger kit from VolQ. Got everything back together and this started happening. I reinstalled the factory parts and same results. I checked the top screws and they are not interfering. I polished the inside/top of the receiver and the bolt top... Polished the barrel end where the round seats and everything appears to be in order. The extractor is clean and not rounded.... No gunk from lube... I have tried running it dry then with a small amount of dry lube and even froglube (no excess). Same thing.

It will eject the spent round and grab the next but the round doesn't quite line up perfectly and will hang up every time.

My first suspect was the mag but seriously doubt that all of my mags are bad all of a sudden.

I have two of these set up the same and the other one cycles fine, even with the new parts installed.

I am obviously missing something but am stumped. I have included some photos, not sure how obvious it is in them, the misalignment is very subtle.

Welcome to the forum!

Check the hook of the extractor. Some times a hook with too sharp of a point on it will catch into the brass of the cartridge and prevent the case from rising as it should into the rim cut. The round feeds up the rim cut face and under the extractor as it does. The lower corner of the hook should have a slight radius to allow the round to feed right.

You have two 10/22's, one that works.

Do some parts swapping, one at a time , process of elimination.

Mark all the working parts with a sharpie so you wont mix them up.

This will at least isolate malfunction to one part, bolt, trigger, receiver etc.

Compare the two bolts or any burr or debris or even compare firing pin protrusion between . Have seen that before.

It is for sure something on the bolt. Switched the good one over to the bad and it cycled fine.

The only thing that is suspect is the little spring that sits under the firing pin. Perhaps it is binding and not allowing the pin to get out if the way for the new round?

I am going to order new springs.


I will admit that I was puckered a little in swapping the parts from the good one to the bad... Just simply because Mr. Murphy has made his acquaintance more than a time or two. I need to have at least one good shooter by next weekend for a match.

Fortunately the good one is still good to go. Mine is the one that is giving me issues, the good one is my 10 y/o's and I don't need him with a case of the reds lol.

I am thinking about just dropping a match bolt assembly in but have zero experience with where to go. I found one at Power Custom but it looks like it wants another part to be installed with it that will lock the bolt to the rear when empty. I like that option. Does anyone have experience with that setup?

There's your likely culprit! :) Good to have a spare around too. ;) As for puckering because of Mr Murphy…if you're working with springs and small parts, do it all inside a plastic bag. if there's a <(sPrOiNg)>, it stays in the bag.

As much time as I have spent crawling around looking for springs that have sprung on the floor of my shop you would think that I would learn.

Well.... As strange as it is I am back in business.

Since I had a new spring and extractor on the way I figured I would keep tinkering to see if I could figure it out. The spring under the firing pin shouldn't interfere with a new round making battery... Or at least I don't understand exactly how it could.

I snipped the bad part off the pin spring and twisted it tight then reinstalled it. While I had the bolt apart I went ahead and polished the ever-loving-poo out of the surface where the bolt meets with the new bullet as well as the top and both sides. A quick test feed or six showed promise. I took it out back and put 50 rds of the good stuff into the dirt followed by some crappy subsonic ammo and it performed perfectly. I had one stovepipe on the last round out of a BC 25 mag that I am fairly sure had more to do with the mag vs the feed problem.

I may run it until it quits, if it does, before I install the new parts that I ordered.

Thanks for the lead. I will follow up on it.

I tore it down again to see if there were any wear marks on the newly polished bolt and it was still nice and shiny.

I knew that these things are dirty to shoot but thought I would snap a pic at what fell out of the receiver.... The pile on the right just fell out.. The pile on the left is what I scrubbed out. Unreal... It is amazing that these things run as good as they do. Another good example of why you shouldn't run them "wet".
