Redhawk (NOT the super) question.

I just acquired a 1987 .44 mag Redhawk. (in excellent condition I must say) Haven't had a chance to get to the range with it yet due to weather. Anyway, am wondering if any of you have one and put a scope or red dot on yours? If so, which type and how do you like it? My vision isn't that great anymore and am considering putting a red dot on mine. I bought this as a companion to my .45 Colt RH. I still have the original sights on that one as I don't shoot it very often. Most of my shooting is limited to range time. However, I would like to take either on a pig hunt. So! Just looking into some experiences others have had with this.

If the barrel is cut for the scope rings, mounting a scope or a red dot is pretty easy. You should be able to get the rings on ShopRuger.com and see all the variations of scopes/dots that Ruger carries.

If there are no scallops for Ruger rings, there are other options, depending on the type of optic:

Start with the Weigand no-gunsmith mount and a Holosun 507C. This combo will cost less than a fancy gunsmith job and lets you test the entire concept. If you love it, you can always make it permanent later.

This is the basic Redhawk with the above mentioned Weigand no drill mount.
Plenty of real estate on top to mount whatever you want and plenty strong.

Mine is the 7 1/2" SS model. It came with scope mounts for the barrel scallops.

Initially I installed a SS scope. I found the gun to be too front heavy and not at all comfortable to shoot.

Then I installed a Weigand mount and a reflex sight. That is now my deer gun.

This is my 357-44 Bain and Davis Redhawk. It has some sort of custom mount that Bain and Davis did for the ProPoint (that I always confuse with the UltraDot)

Thanks for all of the replies and pics. All are very much appreciated. Mine does have the cut outs for the Ruger rings. I also just received the EGW mount for a Hex Dragonfly (had that from a previous project) and it replaces the rear sight. Haven't installed it (them) yet since I haven't had the chance to take this to the range yet. Old eyes make sighting in a little difficult. Thought the red dot would help with that, only one focal point. Most of my shooting is done at the range putting holes in paper these days. But! I still want to keep those holes close together.

Edit...

Here are before and after pics. First with the scope and later with the reflex red dot. As a deer gun shooting Ruger-Only loads I chose to add Uncle Mike's rubbers.

Mind sharing who made those grips? They look great.

The Ultra Dot is an excellent choice.

That is the team of Me, myself and I,, kind of.
I did not really make them but in fact reshaped a set of the huge, monstrous finger groove Mustang Grips.
There is so much material in a Mustang grip you can make them into anything you want.
Can't see in that picture but they ended up with a generous palm swell.

A red dot can assist in shooting. But for keeping the bullet holes closer to each other,, get a smaller MOA dot. No bigger than a 3 MOA.

A scope can also be a good choice,, but it'll also magnify any "shakiness" you may have. Again, a lower powered scope is quite nice.
And yes,, I have shot a scope on a Redhawk since the mid 1980's.

How did you go about reshaping those grips?

Reshaping grips is easy. Just remove what doesn't fit your hands!

Now,, I say that in jest,, but it's actually true. You get a grip, that you like, but needs a bit of fitting to your hands. You feel; "Hmm, it's a little fat here," and you sand or file or whatever a little & try the fit. You keep filing & sanding until it fits YOUR hands.
I just had a conversation with Pat Hogue,, and told him I needed a set of a specific grip, but needed to get one, then decide if I needed to remove a little bit to make it fit my hands.

It's a trial & error process, that goes slowly if done right.

Thanks. The "shakiness" is why I'm going to go for a red dot. Plus, I just happen to have one.
