QC Fail on Taffin 45

Randy is spot on. If you want to see how far out Ruger SA grip frames can be from being flat, visit someone’s shop like Alan Harton or Dustin Linebaugh. Last time I was at Fystinscwe went through the “decking” of machine flattening of a carbon steel bisley grip frame to get it ready for fitting a set of bighorn sheep grips. By the time you locate the low spot (which Dustin said is almost always in the same area) and machine the rest of that side if the gripframe to match you have more than a few minutes involved. Remove part from fixture, flip it over and go through the whole process on the other side and only then to have a flat and consistent surface to mount your grips to.
 
I’m not pleased with mine.

That is pathetic 71shooter! If John Taffin saw that gun and knew it was labeled as one of his "commemorative" guns he would be so upset. Unfortunately with JT's current health condition, I hope he never finds out. You need to send a picture of that to Bobby Tyler at Tyler Gun Works and Jason at Lipseys. It would not surprise me if they halted production of those or at least removed all reference to being a JT inspired gun.

The rest of the gun seems excellent. I payed $1000 for it, and honestly, if it had nice fitting laminated grips, I would have been happy. Probably a .004" or .005" cylinder gap, which ain't bad for a factory gun. Brian Pearce measured his #2 gun at .008”. They really did a decent job finishing the gun.
 
Thank you. Someone else said they handled a 5.5 model, and other than grip fit, it was acceptable. He said his shop was asking 899! Would have snapped it up. I might throw a bid on one.

Pretty sure I'm done buying any new Ruger revolvers if this is the best they can do. Grips are poorly fit, chatter marks and scratches everywhere, filthy (I haven't shot it) and all of this for low, low price of $1000 for a special edition PPP. Fairly certain John would be disgusted.

It depends on WHO is hand fitting them!!! Ruger must have hired the cross-eyed monkeys that Century fired from the AK lines!!! Can Ruger even be considered a quality manufacturer of anything anymore? It seems like everything they have made for years has serious QC issues.
 
There's been two, one 6.5" & one 4.6", stainless 357 Blackhawks recently at my LGS that were both immaculate! I looked them over thoroughly and was very impressed with the fit and finish...Except, for the usual crappy throw away laminated grips.
SO, Ruger is still capable of putting out good stuff...Which makes what's happening with these Taffin guns even more disturbing...🤨
 
There have been several mentions of "hand fit grips". The grips are not hand fit to my knowledge. Ronnie and Bobby had 3 examples of grip frames, from which they determined the best overall fit, and then the grips are CNC machined out stabilized walnut of grip blanks. So all the grips should technically be the same dimensions. Now- has Ruger used grip frames from a different batch than the 3 they provided to Ronnie and Bobby? That could account for the poor fit we are seeing.

A final thought- the machined grip panel has to be "finished" so to speak. Removing any machine marks from the wood and applying some type of sealant or maybe just polishing. I can see some of the issues that we are seeing coming from overzealous sanding to remove machine marks…

I like Ruger rifles and revolvers as much as anyone…but it’s a damn shame they can’t or won’t do a better job than this. I would be ashamed to let a finished product like that, let alone a supposedly “enhanced version” so to speak, leave the building. I have 2 H & R 3rd model top break .38 S &W’s both made I’d guess between late 1800’s to early 1900’s that are immaculate in the grip fit areas!

If I got one, I'd send the grip frame to a grip maker and have 'proper' grip panels fitted. Simple. Of course, that is if the quality of the rest of the gun was up to snuff and of course it shot well enough to even bother... It would be a blued one of course.
