It is interesting how many may not have seen the original ending to Secondhand Lions:
I generally don't worry too much about the passing of an actor. But from To Kill a Mockingbird to The Great Santini Duval gave some inspirational performances
Dang.....but I'll take it.
IMHO one of the best things to come from Gus in Lonesome Dove was the Hat he wore. The crease is now known as the Gus Crease which is a modified version of the Calsbad.

I forgot he played Maj. Frank Burns in the 1970 movie MASH that spawned the TV show.
Also, AssassinationTango is a sleeper movie I thought was good that many haven’t seen.

IT saddens me for us to lose such a fine actor,, and from what I was told,, a heck of a nice guy. Joe Bowman & I spent a few hours talking long ago,, and he said a lot of very good things about Mr. Duvall. He allowed that he was a down to earth guy & well liked by many.
For his career,, he played all kinds of parts, and did excellent work. I too always took notice if he was one of the actors in a film.
We saw a news clip tonight on him,,, and Mr. Duvall said his favorite role was Gus in Lonesome Dove. I have to agree.

I've enjoyed seeing Robert Duvall in many movies. Reading some of his credits & looking at some things today has made me realize he was in more than I thought. I am another that thought he was great in Lonesome Dove, Second Hand Lions & many others. While it isn't an action movie, I really enjoyed Tender Mercies. There is just a certain quality about that movie that I really like.
I can’t think of 5 actors that I appreciate as much as Bob Duval. Every other actor in the movies he’s done have to step up, when they are around him.

I read Larry McMurtry's book long before the mini-series came out. When I learned of the series, I thought it would be a butcher job. But was I wrong!! RD fleshed out the character of Gus to a tee. To be honest, the rest of the cast did the same. Still one of my favorites, watch it whenever it comes on, even though it ends the same way every time.

I always relish seeing the scene in the Dove when him and Tommy Lee go in that saloon and Robert has to straighten that bartender out, slamming his nose down on bar.RIP
His greatest role to me, will always be as Augustus McCrae in Lonesome Dove.
Lonesome Dove, Open Range, & Broken Trail are my all time favorites.
But to be honest he was good in just about every role he played, to say the least he was a very versatile actor.

Are you positive about that? I don't think so. I've seen that movie a zillion times and can't find any reference to him being in it credited or uncredited.
One of the greatest scenes ever filmed was the at the end of To Kill a Mocking Bird when they are asking Scout about being attacked and she tells them about someone saving her and her brother and she thinks about it and then looks over and says," there he is."

I once listened to a interview with the great writer Pat Conroy and he was explaining about his father who The Great Santini was based on and how his father claimed credit for Duval winning an Oscar for the role. Seems he was true to form.
