40 S&W+p+ vs 10mm

Instead of buying and modifying a G20 to work for me as a deer hunting pistol I'm thinking $150 for a 6" supported barrel and a 24lb spring would upgrade my G22 build to handle 10mm level loads. My states handgun hunting regs require a 6" barrel and 600ft lbs minimum for deer.
 
Seems doable, there are Buffalo Bore factory loads that would probably do 600 ft-lbs out of a 6" barrel. Question: is the game warden who sees your kit going to be able to readily approve custom 40 S&W? Might be cheap insurance to do 10mm, especially with Glocks on closeout this month.

Pretty sure the setup should pass most questions. Just with a standard mag. It will look the same. This is the 357 sig barrel.

Peak pressure for the .40 S&W is only 2,500 psi less than for the 10mm, which isn't a lot of difference (if you couldn't find 40 cal cases with the web thickness that you wanted, you could always shorten 10mm cases). That might reduce case capacity a bit, which is the main difference between the cartridges, and the biggest challenge you'll be facing - where a 200 gr bullet might make sense for a 10mm hunting load, you'll likely need to use something shorter/lighter for your 40 cal loads to maintain enough space for your propellant. Everyone knows this isn't your first rodeo, and that you're very careful when 'pushing the envelope', so I'll just wish you good luck & look forward to hearing about your results!

I'm no fan of the .40, but for home defense it's as good as 10mm.
If you are thinking full-power 10mm, then I'd say .40 is better; you won't get any benefit from the additional "power", while having to deal with the additional recoil, muzzle flash, noise, etc.

Yes Buffalo Bore has a 155gr going 1300+ that makes the threshold. I shouldn't have a problem getting that.

That's why I ordered an aftermarket barrel with a Supported Chamber so regular 40 brass should be fine. With the 24lb spring I'll just work up to where it will lock back reliably watching for pressure signs. I'll probably order some 155gr XTP's for hunting and Berry's for plinking. I'll probably get some lighter Lehigh's and see what happens as well
 
I have a friend who hunts with a handgun in CO. He has a custom revolver in 45 Colt, they have a minimum energy requirement in CO

He trims down shiny new 454 Casull cases and loads them up with his 45 Colt recipe.

The authorities just look at the headstamp and say OK, carry on....

I totally agree! Besides, SAAMI is a closed system. They think they are all to end all, which is just BS. THEY DO NO RECOGNIZE THE +P IN 45 COLT either, where BUFFALO Bore MAKES MULTIPLE ROUNDS OF 45 colt +P and SAAMI ignores them all! I have shot some of them, and they are very powerful. The owner of Buffalo Bore (Tim Tuddelson) has produced many YouTube videos, and he discuss many of his 45 ACP and 45 Colt rounds, but I do not recall him ever mentioning why SAAMI HAS IGNORED HIS 45 Colt +P AMMO. THERE ARE OTHER MANUFACTURERS THAT MAKE 45 COLT +P ammo as well (Corbon, Double Tap, Garrett, Grizzly, HSM Bear, and Underwood) so it is not just Buffalo Bore’s problem. SAAMI IS the problem.

I have a very big and elaborate ballistics file that cover 35 handgun calibers and 25 rifle ones. With over 4,00 entries, where each entry is a link to a web site that sell that particular ammo. I originally created it to be able to buy ammo online at the best price possible, but I own guns that cover only 4 handgun calibers, of which .45 Colt is one of them! So, you can see why I know who else makes the 45 Colt +P ammo!

The file is available to anyone who wants a copy. I release it in PDF format, while the original is in MS Excel. Just Message me here and I will send it to you via email. This file is too big (too wide and too long) to use on a cell phone, so you would need a tablet or a computer.

While the 10mm (actually 10.17mm is equal to .40 cal in size, the power difference is quite large. The .40 cal only gets up to 500 ft. lbs., (the same max as a 9mm), but the 10mm goes up to 750 ft. lbs. of ME. SO, IF YOU FIXED UP YOUR PISTOL TO BE ABLE TO SHOOT 10MM AMMO, stay away from the more powerful 10mm ammo.

SAAMI doesn't recognize a lot of very asfe ammo, safe when fired in an appropotate gun. i woulddn't put too much consul in SAAMI.

As I stated in another response here, SAAMI ignores a lot of hot manufactured ammo, including .45 Colt =P AMMO, which many .45 Colt ammo MANUFACTURERS MAKE. So, there is no need to make your own!!! Watch BILL Tudleston (Buffalo BORE OWNer) YOU Tube videos , especially e on the .45 colt n .45 Casual ammo.
