Peak pressure for the .40 S&W is only 2,500 psi less than for the 10mm, which isn't a lot of difference (if you couldn't find 40 cal cases with the web thickness that you wanted, you could always shorten 10mm cases). That might reduce case capacity a bit, which is the main difference between the cartridges, and the biggest challenge you'll be facing - where a 200 gr bullet might make sense for a 10mm hunting load, you'll likely need to use something shorter/lighter for your 40 cal loads to maintain enough space for your propellant.
