Down and dirty version: A person MUST be an FFL to ship firearms via FedEx now.

Only customers holding a Federal Firearms License (FFL) and federal, state, or local
government agencies may ship firearms with FedEx. Customers holding an FFL must enter
into an approved FedEx Firearms Shipping Compliance Agreement before shipping any
firearms with FedEx. For more information, contact your FedEx account executive.
On behalf of customers holding an FFL who enter into an approved FedEx Firearms
Shipping Compliance Agreement and federal, state, or local government agencies, FedEx
Express will transport and deliver firearms, antique firearms, and replica firearms, all as
defined by the United States Gun Control Act of 1968, as well as muzzleloaders and black
powder firearms (collectively *firearms*). Shipments containing firearms must be sent with
the Adult Signature Required Delivery Signature Option.

FedEx Express will transport ammunition when packed and labeled in compliance
with local, state and federal law, and the Dangerous Goods section of this Service Guide.
Ammunition is an explosive and must be shipped separately as dangerous goods. You
agree not to ship loaded firearms or firearms with ammunition in the same package.

Same for FedEx Ground

For a non-FFL you can only ship a long gun using USPS or UPS. A non-FFL can only ship a handgun using UPS.

A non-FFL can still ship by having a FFL ship for them.

Thanks for letting us know. How will this affect say for example returning a gun to Ruger to have it repaired? This past spring, I returned a revolver, and the woman I spoke with at Ruger insisted you do not have to tell Fed Ex what is in the box and you don't have to declare firearms. I had her repeat that twice so I understood clearly what she was saying.

Kevin,
With what they state, I probably would not take a chance of sending it using FedEx if I was not a FFL. All that would have to happen is that it gets lost or stolen and they would not pay any claim if it was sent by a non-FFL.

The lady at Ruger was (past tense) right but with the new FedEx Reg, if the person at the FedEx shipping point is knowledgeable about gun companies and sees the shipping address, they probably would ask and at that point you can't lie to them (see above if it gets lost or stolen) or they may ask if you are an FFL. If you are not, they probably will not accept it.

All firearms companies better talk to FedEx to see what can/might be done for warranty shipments.

The only other recourse is to use UPS or get your local FFL to do the shipping. I would hope that if you had a prepaid label from a gun company a FFL would just charge a nominal fee to get it shipped for you.

If Ruger sent you a prepaid label they are technically the shipper and you are their agent fulfilling the shipping order.

It's cheaper to use ShipMyGun for handguns anyway - https://www.shipmygun.com/go/ (I noticed they don't offer FedX anymore)

I've always just used the post office for long and black powder guns.

Technically, yes they would be, but a not so knowledgeable FedEx counter person may not understand that and tell a person if they are dropping it off, they must be a FFL. A FedEx supervisor might be able to remedy that argument but the super might not any better either.

I'm an FFL and I typically use the USPS to ship everything other than ammo. In 24 years of doing so I have (knock on wood) never had a single firearm package lost or stolen using USPS and I have sent them all over the US including Alaska.

Thanks for the heads up.

Fedex has never been a choice for me if there is an alternative, now they've made my decisions on them easier.

Kind of interesting in that FFLs can ship via USPS and I presume cheaper than with Fedex and so I'd be willing to bet their new rule does not really do much other than put us common citizens out of the loop. The reason for the new rule is pretty obvious to me.. and it is really not what many here would assume... anti gun... this is the easiest solution to solving the problem of a package containing a gun 'falling off the back of the truck."

funny, ups was the first to make it hard to ship back in the 90's. now fed ex shot themselves in the foot. pardon the pun. they were my only go to for shipping to avoid ffl fees.
now ups is back? what gives?
can anyone see how the entire gun business is being funneled into easier control?
its pushing everything back to local sale or repair and making interstate movement difficult.
limits on ammo.
limits on shipping.

just makes it all easier to shut it all down when ever they want.

its right out of the socialist playbook. anyone living here from the block countries will recognize this.

Guess I do not understand why anyone uses UPS or FedEx to ship a handgun. I have shipped quite a few handguns, and always go through my local FFL. His FFL fee + shipping + insurance is always lower than either UPS or FedEx. And, it is way simpler than dealing with those nimrods at UPS and FedEx.

I guess the reason is shipping through an FFL creates a Federal paper trail for good or bad.

Well, unless a handgun falls under C&R rules, it must be shipped to an FFL, so I have to assume that the same "Federal paper trail" is created.

Besides having a FFL FedEx now requires that you must have a commercial account with them. I went through this a couple of weeks ago with them. UPS is basically the same. I sold a pistol a in August and had no trouble shipping with UPS. Sold two rifles the beginning of September and UPS wouldn't take either one. Went the to the PO that I've used in the past to ship long guns and was told that they (this particular PO) would not accept long guns anymore. Didn't go to another PO to see if it's across the board or PO by PO (the postal regs have not changed). Ended up having to use my FFL and eating the (big) difference that I expected the shipping charge to be. I had my Ruger LC Carbine shipped to another FFL and when asked about shipping was told that they would rather not do it. Anyone use ShipMyGun recently?

It's only the beginning folks. It's one of the ways government gets around the 2nd amendment, it allows them to side step Congress and the Supreme Court. And who ever plays along no doubt gets a nice tax break. Next up they will shut down online ammo sales.
And if some of you think you'll get into reloading, think again. They already have that one figured out and have for over 2 years now. And all the top dogs in ammo manufacturing are playing along while hiding behind the virus.
