Congrats-it's priceless cause it is a gift from your father and should be passed on to your son/daughter/nephew and ect. And most #3s in 45-70 haven't been shot much-look at that steel carbine buttplate.

I'm sure it will melt and burn if you throw it in a fire-wood burns too- I heat my house with it. If you shoot it fast and continuously enough to get the barrel hot enough to melt or set the stock on fire why does it matter? The rifle barrel and any useable accuracy will be permanently damaged...

This should have never gotten past QC or test/proof firing. Ruger will make it right- contact them. Ruger firearms are excellent but it is very disappointing to have to send a new rifle back for repair.

Nice looking setup Huntsman-I assume it is a magnum? You have a lot of nice firearms as I have seen your posts on other forums. We have similar tastes evidently. Yeah Jeff it is very frustating to see a manufacturer announce a great new firearm but they only farm out a few preproduction models...

Bearcat, the sights are decent, the front is a yellow green fiber optic insert and the rear is the standard Ruger flip down sight they have used for decades. If I were going to use irons I would get an adjustable receiver mounted peep sight to mount on the grooves on the rear receiver bridge...

Thanks Jeff for the excellent review. I bought a compact .22WMR version a few days ago at the lgs. I wanted the compact magnum version for a coyote calling rifle as there are times in TN when we can't use a centerfire for coyotes. I shot it with the irons when I got home and it functioned/shot...
