On the oldest firearm thread I noticed many firearms in your stash/safe/closet have not been fired in years. That's a little sad but correctable. Let's make this the year of
taking your old friend out and burning up a little ammo.

I am cleaning up an old 6" Model 19 that I have not used in forever. Time to let it breathe a little in the sun.

I have actually thought of taking out a particular caliber and burning up all the ammo I have then selling the brass and guns as a method of divesting my collection.

I am a rudimentary collector with nowhere convenient to shoot and although I don't have a whole bunch, there's a different reason each doesn't get used much and probably shouldn't. SD stuff, on the other hand, is hard to excuse "un-use".

I am guilty of that. I don't shoot many of my old favorites anymore because the old eyes don't like iron sights and I don't want to bastardize them by mounting optics on guns that were not designed for them.

I just can not imagine mounting a scope on my old "Bunny" gun, Stevens 22/410 or on a Remington Model 8 or the Savage Super Sport 30-30 that I shot my first deer with 60+ years ago.

I just keep these old favorites so I can pass them on to the Grand kids that are not big enough to shoot them now.

41 has a super idea , get them to the range . I have been doing that lately ,taking an extra gun or two along on range trips . Just handling and shooting them ( for me ) feels almost like an accomplishment .

This summer I shot 4 guns I haven’t shot in 20 years. I also shot at least 6 guns I’ve owned for 5 or more years that I had never shot before. Most were duplicates, but they needed to be tested.

Mostly it was to introduce my kids to stuff other than .22’s.

Getting ready to start thinning the herd as my kids come of age and I transfer guns to them.

I’m glad I made some progress towards the goal of this thread.

Shooting is like any habit. Requires time, money and commitment. I shoot every single week and go to the club normally twice a weekend. Have been doing this as long as I can remember. Lucky for me, I belong to two shooting ranges both 10 minutes away in either direction. I envy those that can shoot out of their back yard. On the flip side of that is, I would spend a fortune on ammo.

I just checked I have 7 guns I've never shot. All inherited. 3 16 gauge shotguns.

A low number Springfield 1903
A Carcano rifle
A lemon Squeezer S&W
A US break open revolver

I almost got the shotguns out this summer but not quite. They are all rough, but one is a Model 12. Maybe this fall.

The Springfield is still a question mark.

The other 3 I'm not going to shoot.

I am still patiently waiting for a highly regarded gunsmith (who shall remain unnamed) to do the work I requested on a NM Blackhawk two freaking years ago. I'd really like that one back and to shoot it.

Sold my Win 71 and found 100 loaded shells. Have to pull the bullets, de-prime them and list them for sale!

Been retiling the floor, renovating the hall, two cedar closets and re-doing the basement bathroom. Haven't got into the reloading room in over a year-who knows what is there?? (458 Win brass, 338 Win ammo & brass, 38-40, 45-70 & 45-90??) Likely a BP rifle or pistol, a Gamo air rifle?

I have made a commitment to do this very thing. I have been taking one rifle and one handgun to range and relearning how they shoot.

I recently took my Marlin 25 MN (22 mag) with a Simmons scope and was impressed with its accuracy.

I have accumulated a number of firearms and am trying to build the mindset of downsizing. Shooting them may not be the best way build the mindset but I sure have been having fun.

I typically get something out of the back of the safe on every range trip. Usually with a "theme", i.e. .30 Caliber Day where I get out the .30 Carb OM BH and IBM M1 Carb, along with the .308 M77 MkII, or .45 day where the 1911's, LC, and .450 Bushmasters get to take the trip. Next range trip will be -06 day. Need to re-zero the elk gun, but will also take out my 1903, No. 1, the boy's Savage 110, and of course the Garand.

With either a shooting ban or mud I have yet to shoot several of my new acquisitions. When I lived in the city we would drive out to the desert every few months. But now in the forest it seems there is a smaller window.

I did just purchase a CVA 44 mag single shot rifle that I really want to shoot. On top of that I have purchased several Rugers this year that remain un-fired. There are ranges East and West of me but not that close. I think I'll start a thread about that...
