I received my Mark III Competition Target a couple of weeks ago, and am lovin' it.

Only one thing bothers me, the color of the OEM stock wood grips is too red, and I'm considering re-staining them to a darker, maybe cordovan or browner color. I like the shape just fine.

I have had good results stripping off factory varnish from wood grips, using regular furniture stripper, but thought i'd check with some of the experienced here before beginning, as to chemicals, and stains .

My opinion would be for you to save the original grips, and order a new set from Ruger. Then do whatever you want to the new set. Also, try a wood dye instead of a stain. The color will darken all the wood uniformly, instead of accentuating the grain.
