Wondering about this picture

Saw this picture online and wondered if this crewman is following an Old West style policy, carrying a rifle and sidearm in the same caliber?

The sixgun is an Old Model Blackhawk, the rifle looks like an M1 Carbine and the rounds in the gunbelt look like they could be .30 Carbine, kinda long and thin (either that or .357 Mag).

Those belt rounds look like a smaller caliber than .357 to my eye so I’ll say theyre carbine rounds.

Aircrew members in that era were, if I remember correctly, given a pretty wide latitude on what they could carry when flying, especially in combat situations. Carry what you're comfortable with.

Aircrew members in that era were, if I remember correctly, given a pretty wide latitude on what they could carry when flying, especially in combat situations. Carry what you're comfortable with.

I wasn't there but I've read numerous accounts of grunts who were carrying personal weapons.

I flew with a Husky pilot that carried a Super Blackhawk in a shoulder holster. His co-pilot carried a Hi-Power. I preferred the 1911. The other guy in back carried a Model 10. I'm the only one that ever used any of them.

Interesting in that he's holding his rifle as if he's left-handed and yet his revolver is holstered in the right-hand position.

Staged? Probably. But who cares?

I'd say staged. pistol is too far towards crotch and knife is about useless where he is carrying it. couldn't sit or squat with that arrangement. Obviously staged to get everything in picture.

Doesn't look like he has a magazine in the carbine. I do think it's a cool pic, nonetheless!

Apparently a lot of guys liked the M1 carbines because they were light weight - which is how the ArmaLite AR15 started out. We've gotten so used to heavy ARs (heavy barrels, rails everywhere, and all sorts of crap attached), that if you ever pick one up that weighs less than 5 pounds, it kind of feels like a toy - might be part of the reason the early ones got the "Mattel" nickname! But I like 'em: "Put the 'lite' back in ArmaLite!"
