A friend of mine has offered to sell me his Winchester Model 1897 Shotgun but won’t come up with a price. It’s a 12 gauge, full choke takedown model with a 28” barrel, and appears to be in 40-50% condition. The gun was made in 1915 and is missing the front bead, a magazine plug screw and the original butt plate.
I’ve checked Gunbroker and a few other auction sites and the asking prices seem to be in the $450-$700 range, but very little, if any, bidding on them. I believe the Blue Book value in 50% condition is $250.
I want to make him a fair offer, but consider the gun to be more of a neat to have item rather than something I really need, so most likely, she would just end up as a wall hanger at my house!
So my questions are……….What do you guys think a “fair” offer would be? And is there any real demand for these old guns should I decide to purchase it now and end up trying to sell it later on?
