Yep, probably my favorite country singer/ songwriter .I do a lot of his songs, I have the same style of picking he does, or I should say I learned that style from watching and listening to him .
Id love to jam with him one day, I hear that he does that from time to time after a show .

I've been a Willie fan for decades. I attended one of his earliest "4th of July" picnic's at his ranch in Austin. His guitar, his lyrics, and his method of singing make him unique. I also have found out he's a pretty strong Democrat & supports some gun control. Made me sad to hear that, him being a Texan.

I saw a short interview with Willie one time where he explained his stance on gun control like this.
"I have had friends shot over stupid things, and I have no problem with someone having to have some common sense and be a law abiding citizen to own a gun."
 
Don, while I don't doubt Willie said that, he is a heavy supporter for the very Democrats who push for gun control. And if you look at his comments, it's similar comments made by the same Democrats who want "sensible gun laws" etc.

But, PLEASE, let's not let this discussion become political. I was just pointing out that I enjoy Willie's talents, but I lost a lot of respect for him due to his actions as a person.
I also feel he was wrong on how he handled his taxes, and his use of illegal drugs.

Yeah good point on Willie but ya gotta know, a guy like him, he has seen it all over the years, he is still kickin, sharp of mind and able to be a person of true integrity and kindness without acting the fool in the media.

let's see a media slut like Kanye or Cyrus the virus go one month without showing their idiocy, aint going to happen.
And you will note, Willie does not play like he likes Obama, he is just a cordial and polite man being the worlds best pro musician. Other than farm aid and legalizing weed, he does not act the spokesperson for libtard idiocy like Rosie or Joy Behar or Bill Mahr.

My mom said back in 1952, the summer she was pregnant with me, she was in Tulsa and Willie played Cains Ballroom and dad took her, it was too hot for her to be inside for more than just a little while, but they were able to sit out off the side of the building and listen to Willie. No wonder he is so important in my life, I was born about 48hrs later.
She said Willie was so handsome, nice suit & tie, endearing smile, years later when he portrayed Barbarosa all bushy and braids, she said, "I just cannot seem him like this, he was my handsome Willie back in the day."

Thank you Willie, you made mom happy.
 
I was trying to relate a bit of how I both enjoyed Willie & what he does as well as pointing out he isn't always legal or a strong supporter of freedom. It does NOT mean I don't like him, and I have seen a lot of what good stuff he does.
This afternoon I met with a DJ from a local radio station to discuss my Dad's old business, (Talent Attractions, a booking agency, as well as the "El Tango" dance hall & restaurant.) We were going over a LOT of old music stuff, and Willie came up. We both discussed his talents, as well as his "other" activities, from the good ones & the bad ones. We both agreed that Willie is a unique person and talented. I've seen Willie in person a few times, and the experiences were good ones.
 
I may have told y'all this once before , but I'll tell it again since were on the subject of Willie Nelson.
I had quit a truck driving job in Dallas Tx and was going to fly home the next day .I had to be at Dallas/ Fort Worth airport at like 03:30 because my plane was leaving at somewhere around 04;30 .
Any way I was sitting in that HUGE concourse pretty much all alone except for a few other folks , all of them sitting a long ways away from each other . I was board and all I had was my guitar as carryon as I had checked my small bag with my C.B. and the few sets of clothes I carried with me on the road . Well there I sat , alone and board to death so I figured I'd pick a bit while I waited to board my plane . Just so happened I was playing " Angles flyin too close to the ground" and was singing and playing quietly
and just as I got to the lead part I noticed this older guy, long stringy red hair , beard dressed in a dirty flannel shits and jeans and looking like some homeless guy that had been sleeping under a bridge for a while .
He walked up close to me and listened to me play that song and seamed to enjoy it . When I finished he said thanks , that was good and just walked off and sat down alone like every one else was.
I thought to my self " man that dude looks a lot like Willie Nelson, but by the way he was dressed and with his long hair all messy and the dirty clothes I just brushed the thought off .
Later on the plane , about 1/2 way to Philly, which was our stop over on the way to Regan National he and this lady were sitting right behind me . All the sudden like that lady darn near jumped over the seat and asked me if I had a pen. I said sure and handed her one . A minute or so she handed it back with this strange look on her face . I never gave it another thought.
She saw me at Philly and ran up to me and ask me " Do you know who that guy was I was sitting with?" then it hit me . Yep it WAS Willie. she told me he'd said when ever he had to fly on a commercial flight he would dress like that to put folks off other wise folks would be all over him asking for autographs and pictures with him.
I could have dies right there in that airport . to think there I was pretty much alone with Willie Nelson . playing and singing one of his biggest hits and he just said " Thanks, that was good" and walked off .
I missed my chance to meet the man but at least he must have thought I did a good job playing and singing one of his songs cause he was grinning like the cat that had just eaten the canary .
Such is life I guess , but I sure wish id had the chance to speak with him for just a minute or so .

I really can't say I have a favorite, but if I were to I think it would be Phoncho and Lefty, beautiful song and classic sad country Ballard story.
