Introducing the new improved bubble wrap. I received a package today and the contents were wrapped in about 20 square feet of 1" bubble wrap in three pieces. I think everybody loves getting that stuff just to sit and pop all those bubbles.

But alas...when I went to pop one, it just flattened out and when I let go, it re-inflated. :shock: :shock: :shock: These bubbles are all connected by channels with about 1/8" holes. So you squeeze one bubble and the air just goes into the adjacent bubbles and it returns when you let go. All the edges of the sheets are sealed so the air can't escape anywhere.

They just plain took all the fun out of bubble wrap. :( :cry: :( :cry: :( :cry:

They still make those 'air pillows' for packing that come in big long strips.
I always pop them with an Exacto knife. It makes a fun game of don't stab yourself. :D

Sounds like a bad idea to me to link the bubbles. If one gets popped in shipment all of the protection could be lost during transit.

I'll have to look again but I think only the inline rows were connected so you'd only lose one row of bubbles. I think it would be kind of hard for one to get popped if it's in a packing box. It would have to be a quick jab with a pointed instrument since anything less and the bubble would just go flat instead of actually popping.

I put that box with the bubble wrap out in my storage shed. I'll get it out tomorrow and do some experimenting.

Started me thinking though for people packing stuff they can't just cut the stuff off a big roll like the regular stuff. They would have to have something that sealed and cut at the same time since all four sides of a sheet need to be sealed.

I found this on the net. I think it's the stuff that I have. It's sold in sheets with no air in it and the customers inflate it with a special pump.

in the corner of the box and then fill the remainder of the box with the
bubble wrap? I see that regularly. Minimum wage workers and all that. :roll:

Yep, I send for a lot of stuff and also see that quite often. At least it sounds good since the item won't clunk around in the box.

I wonder how long it will take them to come up with packing peanuts that are able to be shipped flat? Maybe they will self expand when exposed to air? :mrgreen: When I was shipping grips, I used to order large bags of the peanuts and the UPS guy always got a kick out of handling the packages. I still have a couple large bags of them.

When I worked as the Shipping and Receiving Mgr for a Arts and crafts store, I use to get so many things packed in foam peanuts, that I'd bag them up and give them away to customers if asked; Beat throwing them into the trash !!

Well if you do stick one bubble and let the air out, you only lose one row of bubbles.
