My son was clearing the snow/sleet/ice off my Hyundai Venue and asked me why I never used the coolant heater. I asked him what he was talking about. Seems I have a coolant heater and never knew it was there. I guess that with this weather it might be a good time to see if it works. I guess that when all else fails read the instruction manual.

Noooooo don't read it. Br a man... The worst thing about not reading the instructions is the wife's comments when I finally surrender and read them because I ran into trouble. Being in Sofka I cannot relate but my brother in Kansas always put a 60-watt bulb in the engine compartment. What no warning light to turn the coolant heater on?

I’m assuming it’s a plug in block heater.

I thought it was going to be a 120v block heater. I see reference to both 120v and 12v in a Google search.

Apparently there is an optional 120v block (coolant) heater you plug in to your house.

And something called a PTC (air) heater with is a 12v 50 amp heater to give you instant heat and to supplement the cabin heat. Mainly because small efficient engines do not generate enough heat.

That's what we always called them. A lot of newer vehicles don't come with them, even vehicle sold up here in the frigid north. My pickup would not have started today had I not had it plugged in.

I honestly have not seen it yet. It is plugged in to an extension cord according to the book. It says three hours prior to use and warns to not start the car while it's still plugged in. I assume some have forgotten and driven off with a long extension cord following the car.

It is not uncommon to see a vehicle driving down the road up here with a "tail".

I think I may have been one

It is also not uncommon to see cars and pickups with an extension cord wrapped up, hanging from the side-view mirror.
