Can someone tell me WHY, in God's name, would anyone think that "hands free" driving is a good idea? And, please don't tell me that it's the same thing as auto-pilot in an airplane because (if you are a real pilot) it's NOT (for many reasons we won't go into here).

I'm especially concerned when watching TV commercials showing a mother driving with her child in the back seat (for safety) and NOT holding the steering wheel. To my mind it teaches the younger generation that it's "cool"; and also teaches their children, that their parents think it's "cool".

Now that I think of it, there may be a reason....(?) Perhaps it is designed to allow texting while driving. Rhetorical Question: Why would you need to look out of your windshield for danger when you can't react to it...? There you go kids.... "better living thru technology".

Hopefully the insurance industry will punish the folks who buy into this foolishness with super high premiums..!!!

As soon as all the cars are self driving, and they can communicate with each other. I myself cannot wait to get a self driving car. But if they can communicate with each other, the cars, they will know what is going to happen at an intersection.

A self driving car won’t forget to use their turn signals. I know, I know, EVERYONE here uses their turn signals, it’s just the “other” people, right?

Self driving cars won’t drive drunk. They won’t text while driving. They won’t fiddle with the radio while driving.

There still might be accidents, but far fewer.
 
I can see the highways of the future being like trains. All the cars going the same speed. Everyone getting there quicker and safer.

What worries me is what will happen to the old cars? Will they let us on the road? One can only assume at some point normal cars will be banned.
 
I can fully agree that humans and their error of actions (doing stuff other than actually driving & paying attention) causes a lot of accidents. Add in the impaired drivers & such,, and we all have seen the results.
Not pretty.

But,, as a wise man once taught me; "Anything mechanical, man made can be broken or modified."
Trusting mechanical or man made cars with 100% control of my life or the lives of my family is not smart in my book.

Aside from the obvious flaws in such stuff,, there is always one BIG thing to consider.

Hackers.

People who can AND WILL hack such systems to create mayhem & tragedy.

I challenge these engineers to point to a single mechanical object, ever made, that does not need some form of human assistance. One that has lasted a lifetime without ever failing. One that is perfect enough to where I can feel comfortable allowing it to totally control my life or the lives of my family 100% of the time.

Kevin you are wrong about one thing...

I NEVER use my turn signals lol
 
I haven’t seen any in a while, but for a couple years, I would see big self driving semi trucks on the I-45 interstate between Dallas and Houston.

I’m not sure if it was a test program or what. Perhaps they started driving at night? Not sure.

They did have a “driver” who was just sitting there. But I also never saw one in an accident either. Hmmm? 🤔
 
I agree, the scariest commercial is the Chevy truck, with the camping trailer behind it and the driver is doing the stomp, stomp, clap, clap, we will rock you routine, wonder how it would handle an evasive maneuver right about then?
I'll quit driving my hot rod when they pry my cold, dead, fingers from the steering wheel... I'll brew my own ethanol if necessary. I am not looking forward to self driving cars, I like driving.

All of the fancy doo-dads on cars just promote more idiotic and complacent drivers. Driving is a full time activity, pay attention. Maybe folks should, you know, pass some kind of driving aptitude test?

And how about the multiple crashes in which the car did not "see" the tractor trailer crosswise in the street, and all in the car perished? Or the fact that (at least around here) the less-traveled roads are nowhere near as well-marked as the main highways, such markings being necessary for the onboard computers to "see" and react to.

Aurora Innovation is a company that has been testing self driving big rigs between the DFW area and Houston.
Its been reported they plan on operating , not testing, in 2024 .

Because that never happens with a person driving?
 
I agree with Contender, anything mechanical can/will fail. Anything controlled by sensors and GPS can/will lose the 'signal' and fail.
Son's previous work vehicle (Chevy pickup) had the 'self correcting' feature(it would buzz and vibrate if it drifted out of the lane). When tested on I 35(which was supposed to be fully setup for this use), the feature only worked intermittently and most certainly couldn't be trusted. Take your hands off the wheel and do the 'boogy woogy' hand clap thing? HE!! no. You'd be ditch fodder or semi soup within a few hundred yards. What happens when this auto control loses it's signal, drifts off course, and then suddenly tries to correct? I assume we all know what happens when a 70 mph oversteer occurs??
We use GPS on the planter tractors and sprayer. One tractor and the sprayer have 'auto-steer' and both work MOST of the time within a few inches of center BUT we're working @ 5-10 mph and no chance of getting FTF with an oncoming vehicle at 2.5 miles per minute closing speed.
 
They will only do what they are programmed to do. Until something stupid happens the engineers may not think of it.
How will an autonomous car deal with a deer collision? Yeah, yeah it will sense it and stop, except for the deer in your side door. The radar isn't on the side.
Tire blow out?
Howe about dirt roads with no stripes to guide the car?

I've told this before.
A new feature for Europe was called city safety. The radar would detect a pedestrain and stop the car before it hit them. Being a new cool feature a group of us gathered to check it out. A guy tested it on a cardboard "human". It worked great. A couple others did. Worked fine. I jumped in the seat. To make sure I wouldn't reflexively hit the brake I hooked my right foot behind my left. Dang car ran right up to the box and stopped. I started commenting on how cool it was. The car started driving and ran right over the box. Apparently if you don't step on the brake after it stops it will keep on going. Back to the drawing board!
 
My newest car is a 2022 Mini that has the lane warning feature. It doesn't keep you in the lane it just vibrates the steering wheel if you drift out of the lane. It has no radar, just cameras so it is dependent upon the road having clearly marked lane lines. I pretty much ignore this feature when driving but don't turn it off since it might be helpful if I am distracted at some point.

I think I'd trust autonomous driving cars as much as I have trust in those guns that can only be fired by the owner that the anti's are so enamored with.

I would like to see two of these vehicles meet on a gravel road.....

Northern MN probably has 50% gravel roads, some barely wide enough for two cars to pass by. Many paved roads are neglected and and the lane markings are not great. Of course all of the "geniuses" who design such things have no clue of the realites of rural America. I think we are a long way from universal use of self driving cars.
 
Even better is the guy who came up with using Hydrogen Gas as a fuel.

It is virtually impossible to make a self-driver that will work in snowy/icy/foggy conditions and in areas with poorly-marked roads (in many parts of the Rocky Mountain region, lane markings are regularly scraped off by plows and not repainted until fall). What happens in road construction zones where the road deviates but the old markings remain? An oncoming car swerves into your lane and there's a family on their bicycles on the shoulder to your right...what does the system do? When the carjackers learn how to hack the system and drive a car into a blind alley where gangbangers are waiting with AKs, what then? (Or someone who just wants to sow mayhem causes cars to simply crash into each other on the interstate?)

As someone with far above average driving abilities, I would be much happier if they would just take the poor drivers off the road and establish a nationwide rail and public transport system so they wouldn't need vehicles, rather than trying to foist a flawed and potentially lethal system on the public.

The “self driving cars” will not even function correctly in a hard driving rain, along with the other conditions that you mentioned so…. That feature is a no go with me!!!
