Any particular reason it has to be a JSP? JHPs seem reasonably available right now. JSPs are an odd critter, and don't expand as well on deer out of a handgun. I cast my own, so I'm pretty much unaffected by the vagaries of supply & demand. Well, that and I'm a friggin' hoarder, depending on who you ask.

Use the 265 gr interlock bullet for the carbine. That's what it was designed for. Midway has 300 gr available. It's actually very good at revolver velocities.
So what is wrong with using your swc loads?

1000 fps with a properly designed cast bullet should do the trick inside 100 yards. To be totally honest, I load a 255 gr SWC to 1100 fps as an all-around utility load. It's still a handful in my Mountain Gun, but it's all I'll ever really need. You can get these sort of velocities with a 44 Spl in a full-sized gun. You're probably only looking at perhaps 11 gr of Unique with a 250 gr cast bullet.

In the days of Hornadys original "cup & core" style bullet, many hunters switched to the 265 gr interlock bullet because it stayed together better than the std bullet. This was especially common with TC Contender hunters. Velocities normally run about 100 fps less than 44 magnum in the same length barrel. This & the Speer 270 gr Gold Dot are especially useful for larger game. I've used both in 44 Contenders and in carbines, along with the 300 gr XTP.

Huh? Do you have heavy deer or thin skinned little deer? I've used the Sierra .44 210 JHC on TN deer and they worked just fine. They all would have been just as dead if I'd have hit them with a good SWC.

I cast my own and don't rely on "opening up" a lot or a little. I prefer to choose a bullet shape designed to inflict the most damage, as is, without having to guess at how the bullet may act on thin, middle thickness, or thick skinned game...Lamplighter said:
