Just purchased 50 rds of ammo marked Gold dot 9mm 124 gr hp at LGS. Came in plain white box. Cost $22.99. Rounds are not in a tray, but in a small ziploc bag. Cases are marked Speer 9mm Luger +P and are either satin nickel over brass, or aluminum. Non-magnetic. Have typically seen Gold Dot ammo in fancier packaging at about $1 per round.

Can anyone shed any light on what I bought? Is this real Speer Gold Dot ammo, and if so, what are the differences from the costlier product?

Thanks.

That is not Speer packaging by any means.

You should have asked your dealer. I wouldn`t have bought it, as it may have been police surplus turn in.

The counter man at the LGS didn't know much about it. It looks like new ammo. See photo below.

It looks like Speer Gold Dot ammo except for the packaging and the color of the cases.

I got the chance to shoot this today from my SR9c. Grouped pretty well and chronographed 1154 FPS average for 10 shots. No failures through those 10 shots and another 17 through the magazine.

What is the risk with this ammo if indeed it is LE surplus?

There is no risk really. I do think it is older ammo though, because there are six cuts in the jacket.

Newer has seven cuts, or at least my .38 special +P 135 Gr. shortbarrel does. All the Gold Dot ammo I have seen has a nickel plated brass case.

SGAmmo has this ammo for $24.99 + shipping, but it is new ammo.
