Which Ruger is this?

My dad's stepfather just died at the age of 95. My dad got a couple of his guns.

This Ruger is one of them.

Anyone know which Ruger it is? Obviously it's a .22. Looks like it may be a MK to me...but it doesn't say that anywhere on the gun.

My dad cleaned it up and shot it. He reports it shoots real nice, and I saw his target at 50 feet or so. Real nice.

I think it might be a little bit older...it has some wear on it but nothing bad. He's going to give it to me, so that's cool.

Early MK, I think, early being relative. Magazine looks like mine for my MK I but I am not an expert.

Go to the above link at Ruger and look up the serial number to confirm series and year.

Looking at instruction manuals, it looks like it's a Mark I Standard. Pops is going to call me tomorrow w/ the serial number. I'll post the year at that point...

As I understand it, it's not a Mark I, it's a first-gen Standard model with 6 7/8" barrel. In the first-gens, the "Mark I" name was reserved for the adjustable sighted "target" versions. I think they started calling the whole line the "Mark II" with the introduction of the second-gens in the early '80s. The new ones are Mark IIIs.

Nice gun, BTW. Very desirable. Cherish it! :wink:

Yeah, I think you're right about the 6" barrel. After I posted I got to looking at it again and it didn't look like a regular 6 7/8"er. I thought it might have just been the photo or something.

Snake45 really got my curiosity up so out come the books.

Assuming the pictured grips and magazine are original I find in the Lueders reference that:

A. Medallion is on left side, therefore pre A100 grip frame

B. Magazine, the one pictured appears to be partially loaded versus at my first glance I though I was seeing board through a double slotted magazine, meaning you have a single slot magazine

A + B to me says old model (pre A100) RST6 (guessing at the length) if it is 4 inch then RST4 or what I would call a Standard and you would be in the pre or up to 1971 era.

Nice pistol.

I've got a MKII with the 6 7/8" tapered barrel and it is nothing short of deadly accurate.

Serial number starts 205xxx (didn't know if it'd be wise to put the whole number on the net)

That tells me (unless I'm mistaken) it's from 1961.

We don't have a case for it. Can someone recommend one...

one that is easy to get into in an emergency but will also prevent little fingers from getting at it?

Due to the inherent unreliability of ALL .22LR rimfire ammunition, a .22 is among the least desirable firearms to rely on for defensive use, and an autoloading one (of ANY make or model) is doubly so.

If you MUST rely on a .22 for defensive use, your #1 and ONLY priority is finding a type of ammunition that feeds, fires, and functions in it 100% of the time, or as close to 100% as you can find. Everything else--velocity, bullet shape or construction, price, brand, etc.--is of subordinate importance, if of ANY importance at all.

In a defensive firearm, Reliability Is Job One. Learn this, know it, live it.

The Ruger should be pretty reliable. Make sure you check out several types of ammunition and find one that works all the time.

Nice pistol though, they don't make them like that anymore!

+1 on trying several types of ammo. Hollow points tend to be a smidge longer that solids which gives some RSTs and MKIs feeding problems.

I'm wondering, can someone recommend where to get an extra magazine or two?

This one is just...kinda old and worn.

Also can someone recommend a decent belt holster?

EL PASO SADDLERY makes a delightful holster or two for autoloading pistols.
A hundred other leather makers do the same but you might as well learn by starting at the top.

Original magazines are available on the various auction sites including eBay. Ruger makes a current model replacement magazine for RSTs and MKIs. Some RSTs will also use a standard MKII magazine with the button reversed, some won't.
