Just wondering why Ruger started using cardboard boxes again (LCP, SR22P, LC9) . I don't mind. I grew up with red/black and yellow Ruger boxes. Storing the gray plastic boxes is a hassle too. But now, the gray plastic squish the cardboard ones in a storage bin if I'm not careful (wink). Don.

There's a lot of different sizes of Ruger's latest firearms. Maybe they got tired of the startup costs associated with stocking another box.
The whole reason Ruger came out with the plastic box was so that they could be locked closed. Then they figured the cable lock was a better deal anyway, so the case didn't need to have holes for a lock.
As to cardboard, it robably all has to do with $.
They do still continue to put their guns in plastic boxes, those that originally came out in those.

I like cardboard. I don't like plastic. And the plastic ones aren't very secure except for very little kids. Anybody with a decent pocket knife can cut into one. There are better ways to secure a pistol.

I for one like the plastic boxes. For me it adds a little bit of overall quality to the total pakage. Where as I spend $500 or more on a new hand gun and it gets handed to me in a cardboard box I instantly think wow how cheap can you get? I dont rely on the plastic box for a secure storage solution but it does make a nice storage box to keep the gun in. They stack relitave well and wont colpass from too much weight and wont deteroiate over time like cardboard does.

And, one can tear open a cardboard box with bare hands....
