I have a Ruger #1 in 257 Roberts. Need to scope this rifle but not sure what scope to use. I have a $300 $500 budget. What would you suggest for a scope.

What is the planned use for that nice No 1? A lot of good scope options in that price range but planned use will help narrow it down.

I just fondled a 257 Bob #1 this morning. If it were mine, I would use up the budget on a Leupold FX-3 6x42. No question in my mind.
Of course, I just remembered that getting a scope to fit right on my #1 was interesting.......

Sorry I guess I should have been a little more specific. The Molson bottle is just to blurry I prefer Bud light when I am shooting.......HA HA
I will be using the rifle to hunt Deer, Black Bear and maybe Moose and elk. The shoots will be from 30 -300 yards. It has a Vortex Diamondback 3X9X40 on it now. The problem is the scope is to short and I can not get a proper sight picture.

I was a Leupold VX3 optic fan for about 12 years but in last 2 years I've become a big fan of Bushnell 4200 Elite series scopes. I have two 2-7X32mm, two 3-9x40mm and one 2.5-10X50mm scope and expect I'll get more in future as I sell off my Leupold scopes. Bushnell 4200 Elite series are clearer/sharper and brighter than Leupold VX3 scopes while being just as durable. I had to contact their customer service for a lost scope cap and they were very helpful.

The only scopes in my inventory that really work out in mounting far enough back on a No. 1, are a M8 Leupold 3X and a Lyman All American 4X. Neither are my idea of a scope for an AH .25-06. A Leupold 3.5-10 (non-AO) will work to about 6-7 power. I have regular and extension rings. I'm about ready to sell the. Rifle while it is still new.

I would advise a used Leupold VX-3. $200-300 will get you a really nice one on Gunbroker or Fleabay.

I will take a good look at Minox ZA 5 or 3. Seems like they have good eye relief and very good glass. As far as I know they are serviced and assembled in the USA with a lifetime warranty. My friend mounted a 3-15x42 ZA 5 on his Mauser 66 which also needs a little extra tube length or eye relief. The scope works perfectly and is very clear.

I have an AH still new in the box. So far, I have failed in every attempt to scope the svelt darling. As close as I have come is a non AO Leupold 3.5-10 (a n older Vari-X III) in extension rings. It works to about 6-7 power with a full sight picture.
I'm built kind of like a bulldog, so my neck, after a couple of surgeries, has diminished flexibility. I'm 5-10 , 220, and wear a 35" sleeve in dress shirts. Yes, I need to drop some pounds. I'm thinking of selling it and going another route.

The older discontinued Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40 or 4X32. Both work well with Ruger low #3 rings, and the tube is long enough to get the scope to the rear. 3-9X40 has a constent 4" eye relief from 3 through 9X.
If you keep an eye on the various sites, they can be had in the $325-350 range.
No.1B has 3-9X and No.1A has the 4X, both in .257 Roberts. :mrgreen:
