Since there isn't a optics & rings section I'm not sure where to start this. My Ruger Hawkeye Guide Gun like my Ruger Hawkeye Scout Rifle requires two different numbered Ruger Rings, The challenge to optic mounting comes when the optic is selected. In order to mount an optic on the Guide Gun it needs to be short enough to avoid contact with the aft express sight. More to come if this is in the correct area?

Now on the solid mounted irons like on Mini Thirty all you need do is ensure that the ocular bell clears the aft iron sight. And if you are utilizing the Scout setup on the Scout Rifle QD rings are a snap, yet when you have Express Sights like depicted on the Guide Gun, optic length is a serious consideration. Photo to follow.

" Yet how do you flip the switches on the Quick detach rings and use the irons in for distances measured in feet in the scrub?"
With a properly mounted scope of appropriate magnification, I've NEVER found or felt the need to remove the scope to use open sights 'in the scrub'. At 30 feet or 300 yards, a scope works.

Ok first off, don't get mad at me. On my carry Ruger 44 carbine I knocked out the rear sight and installed a pearsons universal rail. I put a holosun 510c-gr. I go camping and fishing a lot, it's my bear/cat gun. Optic has a 65 moa circle with a 2 moa dot. I figure if I get in trouble, just put em in the circle.

M118LR....As I recall, Col. Cooper's "guide gun" design used a forward mounted optic AND a set of iron (peep) sights....so to me, anything less is less....On a different but related note, both my 582 Mini-14 and my 585 Mini-30 use an upgraded (Skinner) rear peep in conjunction with the factory installed base and Ruger's excellent (winged) front sight....no, it ain't the same as having a "scope", but I can hit very well with both out to 200 Yds or so using mil-spec ammo and the four basic field positions, which as a practical matter, is about the limit of reliable effectiveness for the perspective rifle/cartridge combinations, and my 75 year old eyes...No way am I giving that up just so's I can mount a relatively fragile scope. But that's just me....Last time I looked, Sandog was using a TechSight rear and a forward mounted mil-dot optic thingy mounted on an aftermarket hand guard of some sort (Omega maybe?) on his Mini-30's. Maybe something like that would work for you...If interested, here's a pic:

My Scout 308 has a 2-7x32 Vortex Scout scope on it. I also have an illuminated 1.4-4.5 30mm Weaver in Ruger rings I can switch to. On other Ruger rifles I have scopes by Tract, Nikon, Bushnell, Skinner, and probably a few more.

I have a Ruger No 1 in 458 Win Mag. It's been abusing the Nikon 2-7X scope with lots of heavy recoil for 45 yrs. Still clear and sharp! Don

Well, there are several...

Model 77 RS flatbolt .308 has a Leupold 3.5-10 with the Boone & Crockett reticle
Model 77 roundtop 7mm Rem. Mag. has an old gloss Leupold 3.5-10x
Model 77/22 mag has a Bushnell Elite 4-12x
10/22 Light Varmint has a 4-12x Burris
An old 10/22 standard carbine has a Bushnell 1.5-4.5x

Ruger #1B .22-250 (1974).....wore a 3.5-10X AO gloss Leupold.
That scope moved to an Anschutz 1516.
Tried an M8 gloss 12X on the #1 and its newer style, shorter tube.
Don't care for the look when using two offset rings but tolerate one at rear position.
The M8 was a little short.
Getting older, my neck doesn't stretch like it used to LOL
That scope removed and put on an Savage/Anschutz 54 sporter. Proly stay there.

My #1A wore a 2-7X 28mm Leupold glossy, but it too mandated some stretch w just an ext ring at rear.
So slapped a 3.5-10X VX3i on. MUCH more comfy. Ideally I'd have 1-2X on the low end for timber deer hunting, but 3.5X will have to do. Yeah I know the 1.5-5x would work, but I had the Vx3i already.
Good enough.

Tried a Steiner PX4i 1-4X on my 1A and it had the tube length to work fine w reg 30mm rings.
But it looked fat so I yanked it.

Now I still need a scope for the old .22-250.
1" and adj parallax.
